The solace I can take is that at least the Respect for Marriage act passed a few years ago - so even if they F around and reverse things (seriously this country is so messed up), my marriage should still be recognized. But it will make it harder for some folks to get married (will have to travel...just like we did back in 2010, which was not easy)

Someone explain to me the angle she's using to even claim standing. And wouldn't that angle mean she's gotta go through all the lower courts first?

This country is fucked. And we really shouldn't be surprised. America is relatively young in comparison to many of our european counterparts who are far more socially progressive than we are.
Pedantic historical point: while some European countries predate the US, actually many (maybe even most) countries in Europe are younger than the US is; Germany, Italy, Greece, Finland, the Netherlands and most of Eastern Europe are examples. Countries like France, Switzerland, Sweden, and the UK (well, if you include when it was Great Britain, which I think is fair) are older, true.

Trying to explain standing in Supreme Court cases is useless at this point, given how cavalierly the current court has treated it in recent terms; it would be simpler to say at this point that when a majority of the court wants to take a case, that means the plaintiff has standing.

This is a big concern for my daughter and her wife. You know they will not stop until they are defeated or eliminate all same sex marriages.

Germany acquired sovereignty in 843, Italy in 1720, Ireland in 1542. France, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK, all older than the United States. If you'd like to split hairs and cite the time the current form of government was established, have at it. But the point remains, Europe as a whole is is far more progressive than the United States, having already worked through most of the issues which are still dividing us.

Huh? Nothing called "Germany" or particularly close to the modern Germany "acquired sovereignty: in 843, and even if it did that territory was split and divided into independent principates numerous times thereafter and has no relation to modern Germany. "Germany" as a sovereign country has only existed since the 1870s. And the Kingdom of Italy became a country in 1861; I have no idea what you think was "sovereign" in 1720 but it wasn't Italy.

I agree that Europe is more progressive than us, just not sure the reason for that is their countries being around longer. Especially given that our country is basically an offshoot of European culture that has simply developed on a different continent since the late 1700s. I think you need another way to explain that than "age of country."

The Supreme Court hasn't even taken the case. I doubt it will. If they want to overturn Obergefell -- and a couple of them at least are chomping at the bit to do so -- this is a terrible vehicle for it.

All Christians, and probably Muslims as well, have to do is make "marriage" a church-only activity and remove "marriage" from government, then this all goes away or almost entirely goes away.

This Supreme Court will find whatever it needs to do whatever it wants.

I remember being assured by some legal beagles that precedence would hold sway.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

Damn I hate it when the poster who i will not respond to writes something that stupid.

The fucking church has no control over marriage in our modern world. Why should atheist and other non believers have to look to the church to marry? If anything we should just tax the damn churches that want to try and force their opinions on everyone.

Religion is a choice. I have no concern with people making that choice, but the church has no rights or control over anything in my life and that is how things should remain.
