The Kenyan authorities have launched a manhunt for a suspected serial killer who escaped from custody after being accused of killing scores of women, the national police said on Tuesday.
And, the police said, he probably had help.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders,” Gilbert Masengeli, an inspector general, said in a statement on Tuesday. He said the actions of eight officers who were on duty at the time of the escape were being investigated.
The Kenyan police arrested the suspect, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, in July after dismembered bodies were discovered at an abandoned quarry in Nairobi, the capital. They said he had confessed to having killed 42 women over the past two years.
On Tuesday, Mr. Khalusha escaped from his cell in the Gigiri police station in Nairobi, the police said, fleeing along with 12 Eritreans who had been accused of being in Kenya illegally. The police station is near the United States Embassy, a United Nations office and other diplomatic missions.
