BTW, those rebels in Aleppo are not what most Westerners would think of as good guys. A lot of ISIL and jihadist ties there.
Yes, from our perspective, this is a fucking gang war. Or, more precisely, the Iran-Iraq war (Islamists against Ba'athists). This is the ultimate "lesser of two evils" situation and I don't care. I mean, I do care about the suffering, but don't care which batch the terrorists controls the government.

Assad has been one of the most brutal and least heralded monsters of our generation. Back when I believed in the capacity for the United States to exercise military force for global betterment, I was a staunch supporter of us becoming involved in Syria.

Well I no longer have the beliefs I once had about America's capacity for good, but I still think Assad needs to be given to his own people for their judgement.

But that's not the situation. Assad would be given to ISIS for judgment. To me, that makes no difference in the end. Death is way too easy a way out for that guy.

But we're back to the old problem of comparing evils when there is a huge disparity in capability. Are we sure ISIS isn't even worse? They quasi-controlled some territory a decade ago, and in the two years or so they held it, they committed unspeakable atrocities. In magnitude their crimes are smaller, but as a percentage of their power? I think we should look to the Taliban, and ask ourselves -- who's worse, Assad or Taliban. And I just don't have a good answer to that question.

The Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) on Sunday launched a fresh offensive against Kurdish forces in northern Aleppo province, as rebels continue fighting Syrian regime forces in Hama after securing Aleppo.

Yeah, I can now say that I think we are in World War III. An international power shift is incoming. An isolationist and protectionist America is about to lose much of it's global influence. A weakened Russia with no economy and no men will break into civil war.

The next move is China's to make. Will they focus Taiwan, or will they strike Russia to get back historically owned Chinese territory?

China’s in pretty shaky shape too, both economically and demographically. This is literally the worst time possible for the US to be taking an isolationist stance. We could continue to maintain relative power around the world for decades, but we’re giving it up for no reason.

We are definitely not in WWIII. Maybe it will come, but mostly what we are seeing is Russia doing Russia things. And Iran and Israel doing Iran and Israel things. It's all coming at once, and the volume is higher than it was, but we are nowhere near a world war.
