Somewhat hilariously, I read his story repeatedly as a child — it was in a children’s book of biographies of heroes that my dad had from his grammar school days. My favorite biography in it was Marie Curie, who was the only woman in it. But Lindbergh’s bio was told as a children’s adventure and included the president sending a U.S. Naval vessel to pick up Lindy and the Spirit of St Louis and bring them back for a heroes welcome in NY. Basically ended there (didn’t even go into the Lindbergh baby kidnapping). Seeing the Spirit of St. Louis in the Smithsonian was a big deal to me on my first visit. I was in college before I found out about the dark side of Lindbergh’s politics.
Later, The Plot Against America really hit home for me as a result, as well, having been exposed to the old time hero-worship of Lindy as a young reader.
