I have no idea how that is supposed to work. Maybe it's easier for oil than other products but it still seems completely unworkable.

This is our discussion from last week. The presumption is that the tariff would apply to all products sold by the tariffed country.

Right. And I still don't see how it would be in any way practicable. It must be particular to the oil market if it is workable.

It’s not workable and Trump is unlikely to ever implement it (or if he did, stick to it). It would put us back to over 100% tariffs on China and restart the shut down of the spigot of goods from China. And it would also impact everything we buy from India. China and India have grown reliant on their fuel discount as primary buyers of Russian oil.

Meanwhile, Trump tied those threatened secondary tariffs to his seemingly arbitrary 50-day deadline for Russia to get serious about a ceasefire (a deadline that aligns perfectly with Putin’s prior confirmation to Trump that he needed 60 days to prosecute their summer campaign in Ukraine to improve their position for any peace plan).

Trump will claim his magic tariff threat forces Putin to the table (if that happens) and meanwhile his announcement convinced the GOP in the Senate not to pass their own sanctions legislation against Russia before leaving for the August recess.

Meanwhile, the trade talks with India have dragged out, with talk of a mini-deal (a delay in severe tariffs against India) by August 1 but more negotiations in India in August targeting a more detailed agreement/framework by October. Which suggests the U.S. negotiators don’t expect 100% tariffs on India to happen after August 1 to blow up that schedule.

Yeah, I've read some articles recently that said that he's actually killing our manufacturing, not helping it. This is just lip service and GOP propaganda that they hope their base will buy. "Maybe if we say that we're bringing back manufacturing over and over and over people will actually believe it! And if they believe it that would be just as good as actually bringing those factories back to life!"
