Teacher Rally in Raleigh Today

But Wait!!!

"Today a left-wing political group that uses children and teachers as pawns to promote all kinds of left-wing ideologies has forced the canceling of schools across the state in order to rally in Raleigh to fundraise for their organization. Even though I know many parents are frustrated with the canceling of schools today (rightfully so), I urge those attending today’s rally to leave the unnecessary political jargon at home and come in the spirit of constructive free speech and help us deliver more competitive pay for teachers in NC, higher performing schools, and increases in student achievement. "A March is being conducted by the teachers in and around Raleigh. They have misled and negatively influenced our children to participate in their politics.Meanwhile, nearly half of the students can not perform to grade level.These same teachers pushing their political agenda on our children think they deserve a raise for their performance.The Capital was respected in the past. It represented the sanctitude that is not being taught today."

Today is a long scheduled "no class" day in Wake county Schools

at least look into why they are protesting instead of this doom and gloom post. Teachers are protesting in Raleigh on Friday, May 1, 2026, to demand increased public school funding, a 25% salary increase, and improved working conditions. Which they absolutely deserve.
 
We have known about the day off school for a couple of weeks now. My guess is Matt isn’t paying attention to school announcements.
 
I hope they get that raise, especially the mid career teachers. I think those are the most valuable.

The question is where is the money going to come from. After the McCrory tax cuts, I have to think we are pretty lean. Fewer roads in less developed parts of the state? Fewer roads around the cities? Bump the tax rate back up? Legalize marijuana?

These same complainers think nothing of taking their kids out of school for a week to go to Disney World.

Agree about the mid career teachers. Most beginning teachers last less than 5 years and it’s not due to pay. NC Republicans are solely focused on tax cuts, trying to eliminate the corporate tax while restricting localities from increasing property taxes. The legislature also requires state permission for cities and counties to hold a referendum on whether it can tax its citizens.

So yeah, the legislature needs to start focusing on more revenue and stop treating budgeting essentials as a zero sum game. The problem with public schools lies more with parents than with the kids or school employees.
