I'm apoplexed!!! Calla swore to me that Pubs like him are only opposed to a ban on political gerrymandering because Dems would never agree to it.

HOW CAN WE EXPLAIN THIS TURN OF EVENTS???

God, calla, I can't imagine how you could still show your face on this board.

I wish that every district in every state was developed as close as possible to 50%R/50%D. Then those folks that have massively gerrymandered seats would actually have to do 2 things.
1) Work to develop relationships and be genuine to maintain the seat
2) Shut up with the BS. Go take a look at things now. The loudest people are the ones in hugely gerrymandered districts. They know they won't get voted out, so they spew crap 24/7.

Why are the Texas Democrats returning and caving in?
Because they were always going to do so. It isn’t cheap to leave your job and scurry off out of state to hide from quorum call and a lot of state legislators are not wealthy people. They have kids starting school and families etc. plus they are running up fines for their intransigence.

These things rarely succeed in their stated goal, whether Dems do them in Texas or Pubs in Oregon, though they get media attention and sometimes a negotiated compromise that usually is face-saving to restore quorum. Here, all the Dems got was media coverage to activate support for responsive gerrymandering in blue states.

I admit that I don't follow redistricting info at all, even within my own state, but isn't gerrymandering, or some form of "party beneficial" districting pretty much a known thing?

CA generally votes 35-40% Republican, but 43 of the 52 district representatives are Dem.

Same with Oregon, Connecticut and other Dem states where Republican representation is nowhere close to representing the actual percentage of Republican voters.

Is the issue that this is being done "publicly" rather than in the privacy of state legislatures?
