I'm big on quality documentary films, and later when my time is not so devoted to the Democratic Party, I will post some favorites in this thread. For now, here's possibly the best one of the year, certainly one of the most important of our time, and available on multiple streaming sites now. See it and share it with as many people as you can.

^ is that an Apple production? I haven’t seen it on the platform.
It's on various streaming sites.

My list of the best documentaries I've seen in 2024. {There are a number of highly regarded ones I have not gotten to yet.}

The Truth vs. Alex Jones
No Other Land
Four Hours at the Capitol
Separated
War Game
Bad Faith
Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos
(this is two parts for television)
The Bibi Files
Stopping the Steal

I am very big on Historical Documentaries. Should there be a separate thread for that genre? Thoughts?

This thread took off like a salamander attempting flight, but who knows? Try it. Once upon a time the old ZZL (pre politics board) had a really great documentary thread that went for years.

I thought the David Chase one was pretty good. I’ll probably be seeing No Other Land at some point.

But I don’t want to watch anything that goes anywhere near trump or his orbit of bullshit.

What I’m missing are classic docs like Crumb or Gray Gardens or things that shine a light on obscure things or people or ideas you’d never know about otherwise. But I’m absolutely fed up with politics after that election.

Yes, I agree, and for a time will attempt to cleanse my mind of Trump and what I would call our American political death spiral. I did see the political topic docs I listed before the election.

Not on the same level, but very worth watching, I will add the multi-part documentary series on the JonBenét Ramsey murder, and the series on the Menéndez brothers, both of which foster some major re-thinking about those cases and people involved. Both start a bit slow and end quite powerfully. In both law enforcement bungling and agendas are exposed.

I missed this first time around.

I really like documentaries but take most with a grain of salt since I've seen many that tailor the argument to reach the desired results.

I'm sure these will get my blood pressure up.

Really sounds like some of y’all would enjoy what Folkstreams.net (linked above/below) has to offer.

Here’s an example of a simple, 6 minute doc.

And this one rocks - in a Wilkes-by-God-county kind of way.

If you want to see a wonderfully strange and delightful faux meta documentary, check out Stories We Tell, directed by Sarah Polley...

Watched this at a music documentary festival (kind of stretch to include it in that category). Found it an interesting story about the rise and fall of media.

“President Jimmy Carter grew up in awe of nature’s wonder. But it wasn’t until he first paddled the Chattooga River that he understood the power and majesty of a wild, free-flowing river. The Wild President tells the story of Carter’s pioneering tandem-canoe descent of Bull Sluice Rapid and how the experience transformed his life and politics. In 1974, Carter successfully pushed to designate 57 miles of the Chattooga as Wild & Scenic, permanently protecting it from development and dams.”

Added this to the list. Her Women Talking is one of the best and most important movies in a long time, IMO.
