4 Sam Sherry, 6-10

Coach Billy Taylor

Look-In: Many Tar Heels know Elon by their former nickname of The Fighting Christians, a moniker that fit nicely with nearby Demon Deacons, Fighting Quakers, and the not-so-holy dook devils. In 2000, the school went secular by taking the handle of Phoenix in honor of the school’s rapid rise from the ashes of a 1923 fire that devastated the campus. Third-year Coach Billy Taylor brings a tall squad to the Dean E. Smith Center topped off by 7-4 journeyman Matt Van Komen (7.4 ppg). Plagued by injury, Van Komen is at his fourth school in six years and is seeking a second graduate degree at Elon. He is fundamentally sound and as one might imagine, alters a lot of his opponent’s shots. The Phoenix will place a second post man in the paint in Sam Sherry, a 6-10 senior who scored at 9 ppg last season. He’s a smart player but not a banger. Nick Dorn (6-6, 9 ppg, son of Torin Dorn) will man a wing while the Simpkins twins will make up the backcourt (T.J. at 6-5 transferred in with 15 ppg from Northwest Florida State College to join his 6-4 brother T.K., who played last season with Elon and averaged 14 ppg – both rebound well for guards). Elon can bring Kendall Campbell (6-8) and Isaac Harrell (6-8) off the bench for frontcourt help and local star and son-of-the-coach freshman Savion Taylor (6-4) and strong 6-3 sophomore guard outta Phoenix, Arizona Drew King round out a well-re-built Phoenix squad.

Frontcourt: Washington has on his thinking cap but brings little athleticism to the court tonight while Withers and Lubin both look strong, smart, and fired up. Ty Claude is, however, bottomed out. James Brown is strong.

Wings: Cade Tyson has the arcs to stand-out while Ian Jackson is soaring in all columns. Don’t look away when Drake Powell is on the court either as he is primed physically.

Guards: Cadeau has elevated Physical and Intellectual arcs…a great combination that signals a highly motivated outing. R.J. Davis is the lone starter with challenging marks while Seth Trimble brings above the fold ritmos in every column.

Overall: The Tar Heels have extraordinarily good biorhythms for tonight’s game. Such marks would be extremely welcome in play versus a more mighty opponent. We’ve got no birthdates for The Phoenix squad (we’ll have them from here on out for the opponents) but the talent discrepancies are large between the Tar Heels and one-time Fighting Christians. Who is likely to stand-out tonight? The minutes ought to be widely distributed but Cadeau should direct this one like Kurosawa, constructing a complex narrative and striking hard from multiple angles. Watch for Ian Jackson to fly as well with a highlight reel moment or two from Drake Powell. Trimble will roll and the big men, Withers and Lubin ought to show power and fire. Vegas has this one a 27.5 Carolina win and that is entirely possible – even probably. That said, it is likely that our Blue Team of Holbrook, Hawkins, and Mayo will get good mop-up moments and that margin will stick around 23 at the buzzer.

I was at a party once outside Morehead City and that nickname came up. Being who I am, I immediately said," Every time I hear that, I think of Christ on the cross with boxing gloves.". To my chagrin, I was immediately informed that the person I was talking to was a professor there. I would have been humiliated if she wasn't laughing so hard.

When I first showed up at Guilford lots of folks still sported “Fighting” Quaker symbolism though the effort to back away from that was afoot. Elon and Guilford were, during NAIA days, rivals of some note.

BTW, image credit goes to Ron Liberti (of PIPE).

Elon is picked to finish 12th in the 14 team Coastal Athletic Association. Towson State is picked to win it with Charleston second.

TK Simpkins is picked second team all-league.

For RJ to have had “challenging marks” I’d like to see his production when he has positive biorhythms all ‘round.

Perhaps Wash had his thinking cap on too tight, and he was thinking too much instead of playing. Withers and Lublin put up decent numbers for minutes played.

Cade’s “arc” was standing out… standing outside of the dome.

As far as the Blue Team getting any burn… well….

Look-In: It doesn’t get any Blue Bloodier than this. Kansas is a legit Top Three in the country and tends to be these days year in and year out. Of late Carolina has struggled a bit more to attain space in the rafters but tends to achieve just the same. As such it is The Tar Heels that have the most to prove tonight…Kansas the most to lose. The Jayhawks are loaded. Four are Wooden Award Nominees – Hunter Dickinson (#1, 7-2, 18 ppg, 11 rpg), K.J. Adams (#24, 6-7, 13 ppg), DaJuan Harris (#3, 6-2, 9 ppg, 7 apg), and Stoor (#2, 6-7, 17 ppg at Wisc) – and that quartet runs the gamut from Giant Center (Dickinson) to Wing (Adams) to Point Man (Harris) to Shooter (Stoor). The Fifth starting spot will go to any number of other talents like “Kansan Returned from South Dakotan Exile” Zeke Mayo (#5, 19 ppg at S.Dakota State), a 6-4 scorer (BTW nominated for the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award) or Journeyman sparkplug David Coit (#8, 5-11, 21 ppg at N. IL). The Rock Chalk bench is full of studs as well with Bigs Flory Bidunga (#40, 6-9 Fr) and Zach Clemence (#41, 6-11, Jr). Mentioning 6-7 Alabama transfer Rylan Griffen (11 ppg) or 6-5 North Carolina raised-up Rakease Passmore (Fr) is probably too much. So there. Carolina is entering a truly hostile venue or unsurpassed history with its own conglomeration of talent but is far more the unknown quantity. Kansas gained at the portal to be sure but Carolina brings more question marks in from the revolving door that makes up college sports today. Don’t forget the history either…Carolina Founding Father Dean Smith played at Kansas and Luminary Roy Williams coached there. Other connections run back and forth profoundly. Yet there this Tar Heel feels absolutely no love for a Jayhawk. Zero. Zilch. Thanks for Coach Smith to be sure but that is all.

Frontcourt: Withers has outstanding arcs while Washington’s physical lags but his fire and intel are high. Lubin has the best marks of all the paint players. James Brown has elevated athleticism and mental acuity. Ty Claude is subbed out biorhythmically.

Wings: You couldn’t ask for better looks from Jackson, Powell, and Tyson. All bring sterling biorhythms to Lawrence. Jackson is soaring across the board but Powell and Tyson are but a half-step behind.

Guards: Elliott Cadeau has it all and R.J. Davis is physically prepped and way smart. Seth Trimble is fired up and a thinker.

Overall: I said it for the previous game: “The Tar Heels have extraordinarily good biorhythms for tonight’s game. Such marks would be extremely welcome in play versus a more mighty opponent.” Well, here’s the mighty opponent and there’s the Ritmos. Kansas has some very fine Life Arcs as well: Dickinson looks ready to power his way to a double-double while Adams and Mayo are solid. That said, the Heels do have the superior astro-numbers.

Best-case scenario is that Carolina has been hiding both a Set Offense and a Pressure Defense from prying eyes in our preseason match-ups and are able to smack the Jayhawks right between the eyes from the tip, keeping them off balance throughout to steal a win in enemy territory. Most likely to happen? A hard-fought contest where a storied home court advantage prevails. Vegas says Kansas by 7.5. But what if Withers does live up to his 95 X-Factor? And Ian Jackson flies? And what if the ball has eyes when Elliott Cadeau is handling it? And a cagey R.J. Davis outsmarts everyone? And an uber-active Van Allen Lubin and Jalen Washington tag team to exhaust the lumbering Hunter Dickinson? And what if the Jayhawks come out flat? The Biorhythms suggest that several – several they say – Tar Heels play above the clouds and Carolina takes this one in a game not in doubt at the buzzer. Carolina by 4.

A word about the upside down Gimghoul Castle. Its use dates back to the early days of message boards and the constant cry from down raleighwood way that Carolina got all the calls and that the press conspired to lift up the Heels while simultaneously play down any lupine good fortune. Many Carolina folk ‘went with it,’ humoring the wolpfackers and their perennial cries of “Its the rayuffs, its the rayuffs!” by adding that we actually have a castle on our campus where the evil plans are hatched. And then we flipped it upside down for good measure. It has, over time become a talisman.

It is appropriate tonight as we’ll need all the help we can get. Kansas is good, mighty good.

Love that optimism but winning in the Phog is unlikely even under the best circumstances.

Preparing for a tough night where we get a clear view of how overmanned we are inside against elite talent and start down the eventual road to a 4-guard lineup.

Appreciate the read - the arcs are crazy.

Normal shooting RJ takes this one.
But KU’s defense was predicated on selling out to focus on him. He couldn’t get open the last 2-3 minutes of the game. So some kudos to them.

But despite the loss, I was very pleased to see the team find some things in the second half. Just had the wrong guys taking shots in the last 90 seconds.

It has been normal for rj since bama game last yr.
dook will roll kansas not impressed
TBH, I am starting to be a little worried about lingering effects of his preseason back injury.

But KU has some holes/issues of their own for sure.

We will know a lot more about our team at end of this month. We are not as bad as we looked vs elon and not as good as we looked vs kansas imho
