I hated Charlie Kirk. He was the Fascist Right’s favorite conduit to our youth, funded and backed by the world’s most malevolent forces - greedmeisters, White/Jewish supremacists and assorted other bigots (don’t ever complain to me about “woke”-ists).

But his invidious grift is a time-tested one, stretching all the way back to the muckrakers and pamphleteers but amped up on the morbid excesses of a brave new culture.

Following the coverage and commentary of this tragic act today made me feel ashamed of my feelings toward a fellow human who stumbled upon a lucrative hustle, a real measure of success in this vapid, nihilistic era. I am forced to recognize my own acquiescence to and participation in a culture of hate.

We all need to remember not to hate the player; hate the game.

I definitely eye rolled at the thread saying "assassinated". It brings to mind the Chris Rock bit about the deaths of Tupac Shakur and Chris Wallace.
 
A poster on the old ZZL just wished death on another poster and his family in their version of this thread. That dumpster fire of a board needs to be eradicated.

Kirk was shot at the very minute he was blaming trans shooters and gang violence. I wonder if the person in the audience asking those questions was in on it.

He used racism, bigotry and hate for his hustle, though. Not agreeing with evil and fighting it isn't hate. I don't want violence to be the answer, though. It probably wouldn't work anyway. But if someone is okay with being a terrible person and using hate to grift others, that's not just the game that is the problem. That person is choosing to spread hate on others just for being a person of color, or gay, or trans. They are spreading hate for people just because of who they are, not for anything they have done or how they have treated others.

They must have actually removed that post, because I don't see it.

I did see a mod post on the Charlie Kirk thread there, which is the first mod or admin post I've seen on the ZZL since IC left for On3. (I didn't recognize the poster.) So maybe he removed it.

Meh.... that's how social media works. That's largely not how the world works. Just because something horrible happened to a high-profile person doesn't mean the social media world needs to, or even should, completely change its ways.

The grieving should stay off social media or be prepared to deal with what is there.

True dat (though I do some thread and extreme trolling housekeeping from time to time). For those offended by assassination in thread title, for instance, that’s on me, not Rock.

I did try to be balanced in my moderation and to created a culture with a lot of room for adults to push each other without crossing certain lines.

It is a tough job in any circumstance, even with the self-moderation options Rock has delivered, an event like this during a period of heightened tensions makes it nearly impossible to find a balance.

I encourage all our regulars to consider how our community is maintained by a lot of donated time and effort and also by your own personal restraint.

If I were still officially moderating, which I am glad today not to be, not sure how I would handle a thread like this. People need space to vent but I am sorry to see how our own community can target each other to the extent happening here. But maybe better here than elsewhere?

I dunno. I stepped back from moderating for a lot of reasons and today I feel both relieved but more like a craven deserter.

Yeah, it was deleted either by the poster or a mod.

That poster is a high school teacher too 😬
