Are you comparing the two? The only appropriate comparison is that both were male and neither deserved to die. There was a comment in an earlier post saying CK shouldn't be lionized. My guess is you likely agree with that. You know who else shouldn't be lionized? George Floyd. Didn't stop the media and many on the left though did it?
No, I just think it is ironic that in their effort to lionize Kirk, the Republicans in Congress choose a day that a good share of the maga base would find infuriating, even though it is Kirk's birthday.

If I were to compare the two, I would say that Floyd was killed by the government while Kirk was killed by a troubled private citizen. Floyd wasn't killed by the GOP or 'The Right' and Kirk wasn't killed by the Democrats or 'The Left'. Both are tragic circumstances. I don't particularly think either should be lionized, they weren't saints although in obviously different ways. I feel for both of their families and neither deserved what happened to them. I don't agree with Kirk's views, but I would defend his rights to share them. I think his willingness to engage with his critics/opponents face to face was commendable particularly when so many of the younger generation lack interpersonal communication skills.

I would criticize a Democratic administration if they ordered the US Flag to be flown half mast for Floyd just as I don't think it should have been lowered for Kirk given that neither had any military service or service as a public official.

Although I think there certainly a few people in the administration who were genuine friends with Kirk, I don't think that most of the administration particularly cares that much about Kirk other than how they can use his death to advance their agenda. The GOP should probably care quite a bit because without Kirk, I'm not sure whether or not the rightward shift of GenZ or GenAlpha will continue. Time will tell.

George Floyd was never lionized. He was a symbol. He was the image of a guy who came to represent the effects of brutal, racist policing in America. That's all.

I didn't fall for anything. It is a variable in all of this and you seem only focused on one aspect of it. Namely, the fcc pressuring ABC. While I agree that is very troubling based on what knowledge I have, it isn't the only thing in play. This relates to only broadcast licensing. JK can now say anything he wants and the g'ment can't touch him. So his freedom of speech hasn't been neutered. Only his ability to draw a check from ABC and say dumb shit. ABC, part of a public company where profits matter, could have told trump and the fcc to kick rocks but they didn't because....why?
1. Because it was Sinclair and Nextar who made the decision. ABC can't have its programming indefinitely preempted locally.
2. Nextar has a merger that it will be presenting to the FCC for review. That's what it was all about from their perspective. And Trump has already demonstrated in his first term that he withholds merger approvals for parties he doesn't like, especially media companies.
3. Sinclair is not a public company to my knowledge and they are extremely right-wing.
4. Of course his freedom of speech has been impacted. Certainly a hell of lot more than campaign finance contribution limits impact donors' freedom of speech. If you get deplatformed by the government when you open your mouth, it affects your ability and desire to continue. And it sends a message to others, don't try this again.

Tucker Carlson produces content for twitter but he has nowhere near the reach that he did; he makes less money; and his show is worse because he doesn't have the whole staff that a network budget can purchase. But Tucker, of course, was fired because he cost Fox News hundreds of millions of dollars, not because of anything he said.

US Senate declares Oct. 14 as 'National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk'

A national day of remembrance for a podcaster that toured college campuses?

I absolutely LOVE this idea. And what better way to celebrate Charlie Kirk's contribution to the world than display his teachings for everyone to see? On this day, anyone on this board that has a social media account, I humbly ask that you choose a direct Charlie Kirk quote (or many quotes!) and post them to your feed. No need to hyperbolize his beliefs, simply post them with full context and let the world understand what Saint Charlie was all about. Let's spend the day getting Charlie's philosophy out there under the spotlight for the entire world to enjoy.

Let's make this Remembrance Day special!

I agree with almost every word. I think flying the flag at half mast should be reserved for the military and distinguished members of the g'ment.

In an earlier era people like her would claim to be "faith healers" who could cure people by the laying of hands (and the people being "healed" are actually a part of the scam), or a quack medicine saleswoman in the Old West offering elixirs to the gullible that were mostly whiskey and opium but could supposedly cure everything from cancer to gout. And there really are suckers born every minute, in every generation, who will eat it up.

This is a joke right?
I think a part of this is that MAGAs get a thrill out of being able to force others who don't agree with them to bend to their will and "honor" Kirk anyway via shit like this. One of the things I learned growing up is that Evangelical Christianity is a very public religion - in hindsight it often seemed as if being religious in public was more important than being a good Christian where it really counted, in private. In that sense it's a very aggressive religion - government is to be used to promote their version of Christianity, in communities they dominate their social and cultural views are not only accepted as the norm, but anyone outside that norm is barely tolerated at best and harassed and persecuted at worst, and so on. Being seen as a steady churchgoer who proudly carries the KJV was more important than actually following the teachings of Christ supposedly taught there. And so on. Being a church member was a sign of social status in the community.

And forcing others to praise and honor Charlie Kirk is just another way of illustrating that their norms are still dominant and in control.

Maybe you missed this.

Trump’s been about pettiness since he could first form thoughts and was pooping in diapers……which he’s now doing again.
I can endure pettiness to gain control of our borders, get wokeism out of our military and other agencies and schools, generate the economic development that many countries have pledged, free up energy production, etc. because I know the pettiness will be temporary and then he will be gone like a fart in the wind.

didn't miss it. That is what I referenced as troubling. But if ABC feels it is not constitutional, they can take the fcc to court. And in my opinion they would win. However, they didn't. That is the "why" part of my comment. If JK had been a huge ratings win and big profit generator then ABC would have fought any actions by the fcc. The concept of late night comedy shows on broadcast TV is dying and ABC knows that. This entire thing gives ABC the out they likely wanted but were to afraid to act on. I don't fault the left for feeling the way it does especially given how much you guys preach the fascist crap. But do you not think it odd that ABC wouldn't also be screaming this is fascist and undermining free speech. Shouldn't ABC be leading the free speech fight on this? But again, they aren't. Does ABC not give a shit about free speech?

Nothing will be temporary about the ripping apart of our society that is occurring in real time. And make no mistake, it is absolutely being ripped apart. People such as myself will never believe the US and Americans overall can be a kind society or worthy of trust and personal commitment. I'm just one of millions who feel that way here in the US. There are tens or hundreds of millions who feel that way worldwide among our traditional allies. That trust will never be rebuilt. I'll never look at conservatives and feel I can do anything other than distrust them. Foreign countries will feel that way about the US as a whole. They will capitulate long enough to form bonds and trading partnerships that exclude us and then they will abandon us to devolve into chaos on our own.

People such as yourself apparently wanted to turn over the apple cart. Well, you got it. It's happening and there won't be any taking it back. Trump's unique gift to America will be ushering in the truly evil people that currently surround Trump and will crush us all with their greed and lust for domineering control.

ABC and Disney are in an impossible position because their affiliates pulled all their programming. Now the affiliates are happy but Disney is hemorrhaging subscriptions. Whether you like it or not, all of that was at least partially pushed along by the FCC chair weighing heavily on the affiliates who need FCC approval for their mergers.

To each poster who said callatoroy was becoming “less MAGA,” I give you this poast.

callatoroy is as MAGA as he’s ever been.
