I thought it would be fun to have a "hobby" thread on here where we talk about what we enjoy doing in our free time when we aren't on here talking politics.

You are free to talk about lifelong hobbies, ones you picked up recently (IE, over Covid), or hobbies that you are trying to get into.

One hobby that I'm currently mulling is archery. A friend of mine has a decent longbow, and I have practiced a fair amount using it, but I'm now looking into buying a bow for myself. Any archers here? Can you recommend a specific bow that is a) good for beginners, but b) would be good enough that I would still want to use it once I became a novice/intermediate?

Close friend of mine who is a mechanical engineer for Meta got really into archery and knows all about it. I will ask him.
 
I have a Samick Sage recurve bow with a 40 pound draw that I plunk around in the backyard with. Had it for two years and have left it strung in the garage the whole time, still shoots great.

Do you feel like 40 pounds draw weight is the right amount, or would you have gone higher/lower if you were to buy again?
 
I've got a Bear Archery recurve bow someone didn't want. It's only 35 lbs but it gets the job done.

What do you intend to do with your bow? Are you shooting at targets or hunting?

So then you are probably fine with a lower draw weight. And compound bows are generally more for hunting. Long or recurve is probably better for your needs.

I just double checked and it’s actually 35 pounds. I think that is about right, but to be fair I haven’t shot anything else. It’s enough to take some effort but I’ve never been sore or gotten hurt from shooting.
 
This thread may just be exclusively about archery. But I’ll mention my longest running hobby. I’ve been roasting coffee at home for more than 15 years. I love being able to try different beans from all over the world. And it makes for great gift giving around the holidays.

Any other home roasters on here?

This thread is about hobbyists. I figured the archery question would help get it started. But all hobbies are welcome. With that being said, As a non coffee drinker, I have nothing else to add.
