Many will tell you Democrats made them do it [not endorsing that belief, just something I am starting to see more frequently on social media, versions of it’s not my fault, Dem’s made me do it because [wokeness] [woman] [Gaza] [inflation] [Biden] [Harris] [immigration] [girls sports] [embracing neocons] [student loans] [insert issue].

Outside of MAGA, MAHA, the Manosphere and Musketeers, who mostly remain thrilled by almost every new instance of lib-owning destruction of the government, people are not ready to take responsibility for their vote (or staying home).
Trump voters have been saying this bullshit ever since 2016. It's not their fault that they actually voted for him, for some reason it's the Democrats who are to blame for the fact that most of these people voted for him two or even three times. And the vast majority of these people were never going to vote for Democrats unless they behave and believe exactly like Republicans, which is what they want. The people who say this are the same people who have nothing good to say about any Democrat, especially one that isn't a white male. If only Democrats didn't believe and behave like Democrats then we might support them! And the ugly truth is that these people like Trump, support most of what he supports, and gladly voted for him. They just won't take responsibility for their vote because they know damn well how their vote looks and sounds to other people.

Outrage on tap. Its an addiction.
It's a conservative thing. I have older relatives that used to watch Dan Rather when he was on the CBS Evening News even though they admitted that they hated him. And when I asked why they would watch their answer, whatever they actually said, always seemed to boil down to they enjoyed being angered and even outraged by what he said, or how he said it. And the whole "Fox News Orphan" thing is real. There are huge numbers of retired or semi-retired people in this country who do little but sit around their house or apartment all day watching Fox News or Fox Business, and it really is an addiction. And they believe every damned thing they hear from those two networks, so it becomes easy to transfer that belief/gullibility to Trump.

I had a person my life for decades that was very smart , very successful-he taught in the Med School and the english Dept-so yea well rounded . For deacdes He was pretty apolitical in the party politics sense. Somewhere around 60 he started watching Fox news etc....And he spent his last couple decades wrapped increasingly in that bullshit....I understood the "taxes" part-he was making real nice money by then....But I never understood the rest
What moves an individual voter the way that voter moves is a dynamic that changes from voter to voter. I certainly agree, the outside influences on voters like Fox News and disinformation have changed and are major culprits. And of course Republicans have learned to utilize such things.

Combating these issues are a good idea. Just hope Democrats also focus on cleaning up their own little red wagon, whatever that means. For MAGA inclined voters it won't matter. But it matters to swing voters that there is a viable alternative. So putting the shine on the Democratic Brand is always a good idea.

I’d say that, more than anything, it’s the relentless propaganda.

I remember hearing Rush Limbaugh in the early 90s and thinking….wow, he smears people, makes wild claims, pushes misleading ideas, is nonetheless (sometimes) funny and charming — for HOURS everyday. What’s the end for this?

Well, after the growth of the right-wing propaganda industry — more and more Limbaugh-style radio hosts and Fox News and all the internet garbage — I guess here we are.
I listened to him a few times in his early national show to see what a friend of mine was talking about. My friend (owned a couple restaurants) could relate because of 'stupid sanitary regulations', ADA stuff, etc.

Rush loved to find stories about government meddling, incompetence, etc. especially in small towns. Of course, not the whole story. Then anyone calling in defending the measure would never get to speak their whole mind, get callwd names and hung up on.

One story was a guy called in complaining the the city had cut down a sign he installed close to the road and blah, blah. Interestingly, the mayor then called in explaining how he had broken code, been warned and it was a hazard to drivers sight lines. Said he was a solid republican but sometimes rules are needed. Rush called him something stupid and proceeded to vent on gvmt interfering with citizen's rights to run their business, stifle the economy, and so on.

My buddy agreed with Rush. SMH.

Little guys, small business owners, etc loved tuning in to hear the gasbag call people names and hang up on them.

So it evolved to all government is bad leading right up to what we have today.

Gotta have standards otherwise neither party is likely to get the hint. The hint being "Stop giving us garbage candidates in elections or we'll stay home/vote 3rd party."
I would say that standards would mean voting for those who most closely along with you.

How did we get here? What made 77 million Americans fall for the grift of an orange pos idiot like Donald Trump? I just don’t understand it.
A man of color was elected President twice. Gays were allowed to married, and the LGBTQ community were being treated as equals. True history was being taught in schools. Companies made an effort to have equality and diversity in the workplace. All of this made the straight white Christian nationalists scared to death of losing their privilege and place in society by just being straight white Christians. They couldn't handle anything different outside the bubble they want their world to be. They lost their minds and resorted to electing a horrible person like Trump because of racism, bigotry and greed.

If Hitler and Mussolini were both running, I'm sure I would have more things in common with one of them.
And, if that were your only choices, then one of them would be better than not voting.

I mean if you don't vote how do you have a right to complain about the person that wins? Or gloat for electing an imbecile?

Every Trump voter is not a raging racist homophobe, although many are. But the most common of them are just ignorant and uneducated rural people. If you didn't grow up around them and get out of that world, you just don't understand them. You can't. The Democratic party has completely lost them. We have to find a way to make inroads with them and as I said right after the election, calling them idiots and fools and bigots is not the way to do it, even if it's pretty much the truth. You can't win elections if every single rural white in the entire country votes against you. And that's basically what is happening. While we've got a good handle on the minority, urban and educated voters, we can't completely ignore the largest voting block in the country - the broke ass honky.

ETA: And I know this might piss off some people, but the Republicans at least understand that you have to get elected first before you can do anything. And it's a very uncomfortable truth that running women and minorities for the presidency at this point in time eliminates a substantial percentage of voters right off the top, and elections are decided by small percentages. Obama was a generational candidate. Hillary and Kamala do not have the charisma to overcome the prejudice. We have to get elected first, and not pretend we're in some idyllic utopia. We absolutely have to put the most electable candidates we can at the top of the ballot, else we risk people who actually want to hurt minorites and women gaining control, which is exactly what has happened.

Let's see maybe:
Greed, ignorance, racism, misogyny, isolationism, Christianity, Islamism, just a few of the wonderful results of Fox & other outlets ginning up fear mongering and like Trump never taking the blame!
At this point "Idiocracy" was too kind to the public. Meanness and pretty grievances are their main currency. Of course the Dems made their self delusional narcissistic asses vote against their and my best interest.

Ronald Regan famously said "Let's make America great again" in 1980. Trump repackaged that and played on the feelings & emotions of older Regan Republicans who were scared of the Barack Obama boogieman. It evolved into bro culture and was incubated by disinformation. Trump tapped into deep-seated racism. The Dems, perhaps arrogantly, ran two candidates against him that were failures. Not because either was unqualified... but because this country is still incredibly young and incredibly backwards. It's a folly we may not survive.

Disagree.

I voted, just not for Harris or Trump.

I voted for Chase Oliver.

Disagree all you want, if there are two candidates one of them will win. Your third party vote is simply a personal statement that is disregarded by the country.

Chase Oliver wasn't a candidate he was an afterthought. Did he get a single EC vote? Did your vote accomplish anything? NO it didn't. Now had you realized there were two candidates, you could have voted against the chaos we have, but instead your third party vote helped to produce what we have now.

The truth is the non viable third party candidates need to realize their role in what happened and apologize and in the future they should really consider the country and drop out of the race once it becomes clear they cannot win or make a difference.

Pragmatically you're probably correct. I don't really have a problem with a third party or protest vote, though and don't want to discourage third parties.

These questions came to mind while reading the MAGA Family thread. I'm curious about the range of opinions.
  1. What does it mean to say someone is "MAGA" or part of "MAGA"?
  2. What percentage of the 77 million Trump voters do you believe fall into the MAGA category?
