In 1972, Richard Nixon won in a landslide spouting the Southern Strategy and comments about the Silent Majority. A shitload of Americans thought Archie Bunker was real and right. How did we get here? What made 77 million Americans fall for the grift of an orange pos idiot like Donald Trump? I just don’t understand it.
In 1980, Reagan won in a landslide, beating an incumbent. He ran on the Southern Strategy; he opened his campaign for the 1980 Presidential Election at the Neshoba County Fair, advocating states’ rights.
If Neshoba County doesn’t ring a bell, think about the movie “Mississippi Burning.” Neshoba County is where the State of Mississippi, the local government, and the Klan murdered Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney; and, buried them in an earthen dam. Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman were committing the unholy act of registering and encouraging black Mississippians to vote and stand up for their rights. That’s where Reagan chose to open his campaign and to speak about state rights.
In 1984, Reagan won running on “Morning in America.” Which was a continuation on the Southern Strategy; or, a precursor to “Make America Great Again.”
Trumpism isn’t new. We’ve held it at bay on occasion.
