The Music Thread

Maybe it's just me - and I'm nuts - but
  • I like The Allman Brothers Band better than Skynyrd
  • I like Marshall Tucker better than Charlie Daniels, the Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, et.al.
  • I like the Flying Burrito Brothers better than the Eagles
  • I like the Beatles and the Stones BOTH
  • I like the Atlanta Rhythm Section better than the Amazing Rhythm Aces
  • I like The Who and Led Zeppelin better than Pink Floyd and Queen
Carry on...
I love the Allman Brothers ( my favorite band ) but I also like Skynyrd very very much
Definitely Marshall Tucker over those other guys
Eagles x10 over the Burrito Brothers
Who doesn't like the Beatles and the Stones ?
Those two bands have never been on my radar
I like The Who and Led x10 better than Queen for sure

Super can’t stand the Beatles. Not sure about his thoughts on the Stones.
He’s usually not on the music thread so I doubt he can get here and tell us why

Speaking of Skynyrd, you cross the Georgia/Alabama line on I-20 heading toward Tuscaloosa and one of the very first signs you see is a sign that says, “Sweet Home Alabama.” Pretty cool.

And will add I like Neil Young better than Skynyrd.
And I can say that as my mother is from Talladega, and I lived there a good portion of my life. I’ll take Neil and Canada any day.
I was learning how to play guitar when Sweet Home became a hit. I was proud of it to start with… but time sure does take care of things, now doesn’t it?

Have you ever listened to Southern Rock Opera by Drive By Truckers? It's about Lynyrd Skynyrd, the South and and the duality of being Southern. Young and Skynyrd were scarcely enemies. I understand that he first offered Powderfinger to them. They had some serious disputes but both of them realized that there was some truths on both sides.

Haven’t heard that album by the Truckers. Though I know that band to be good. Have no doubt that any animosity (if much at all) between Neil and Skynyrd was mostly fabricated in the minds of many.

Growing up in the South - in 5 different States in the South - and cutting my teeth on bluegrass guitar in the early 70’s, I literally lived that duality and can speak to that.

I saw Skynyrd in Charlotte in 1975 (I believe, or ‘76… those years are cloudy for some reason) . It was a double bill with Marshall Tucker Band.
The Caldwell boys - Tommy and Toy and co. opened the show. They slayed. Then LSkynyrd took the stage and Ronnie VZ was totally wasted, 3 sheets in the wind. First song - he picked up the microphone stand and swung it like a baseball bat. He clipped another microphone stand and electrocuted himself. He dropped like he’d been shot. Show comes to a screeching halt. Lights come up (revealing the thick cloud of smoke) EMS on the stage. They have to haul Ronnie off on a gurney.

About 30 or 45 minutes go by, then it was announced the show must go on and the Tucker boys came out on stage with what was left of Lynyrd Skynyrd and they did a combined jam. Playing basic blues and songs like Will Circle be unbroken, etc. etc.

It was there and then when Toy Caldwell showed Rossington and Collins how to play the guitar. Toy stood up there with his bow legs and his thumb and his chicken Pickin and he absolutely tore those boys a new asshole. The Skynyrd guitar players could do nothing but sit there in wonder with their jaws slack. Toy Caldwel toyed with those boys. Embarrassed them.

All I’m really saying is that, personally, I prefer Neil Young - and all of the songs he’s written and recorded, and his work with Buffalo Springfield, CSNY and Crazy Horse - much better than Skynyrd. That’s all. Just an opinion.

I'm not a huge fan of either and think Neil interested me most with Buffalo Springfield, a great band. I think both are very talented but neither of them are exactly a right fit for me somehow.

Can't disagree with your preference for Neil Young. I love CSNY and have a few Neil Young solo CDs.

My favorite is " Live at the Cellar Door". I wish I could have been there that night night in a small cozy club...

I hear Dave Edmunds had cardiac arrest and was gravely ill since late July.

Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams play on each other's albums as Rockpile, and OG/power pop rock band/R&R roots in the 70s and early 80s. Edmunds had a big US hit in I Hear You Knocking and the Rockpile group had singles successes in the UK and a bit in the US, largely on the solo albums.

Williams was later a member of Dire Straits. Edmunds and Bremner are Welsh. Williams is Scottish and Lowe is the lone Englishman.

At their peak covering Elvis Costello's Girls Talk for Edmunds' album Repeat When Necessary"

Buddy Holly is the greatest . Some of you fellow old codgers will remember. I'm recruiting youngsters to appreciate some of the antecedents of American rock and roll

The very best of Buddy Holly 3 disc CD says it all and should be in everyone's collection

This is from his Ed Sullivan performance

Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens were only 22 and 17, respectively. Holly was a Gershwin, Brian Wilson, or Stevie Wonder level genius and was writing more and more sophisticated stuff before perishing that cold night.

It don't get better than the Impressions... Curtis Mayfield ? Jerry Butler ?

I'm in a mood where I need some help today so somebody help me, please

I've made this pitch before, but for those who love blues and roots music, I encourage you to check out and support Music Maker Foundation in Hillsborough, NC.

Music Maker promotes roots music and raises money to promote and support the older blues and roots artists who are struggling in their golden years. If you join their "listener's circle " they will send you 5 or 6 great CD's a year. I have been a member for several years .

I'm posting this because I just received my latest CD by Leonard "Low Down Brown " and I am listening to it now as I continue to day drink since this morning...

Here is a taste... and hope you check out and see what Music Maker is all about
