He graduated from high school in New Bern, so I imagine he went from NC straight to Indiana that summer.
That’s what Wikipedia suggests. No mention of Brooklyn.

Just sloppy reporting.

He was the #1 pick in the draft and the ROY.

West and Robertson are All-Time Greats to be sure and Lucas isn't far behind. Dischinger had a few good years. Bellamy played 14 years, starting out with numbers to rival Chamberlain and declining every year afterward until he was a lumbering Big at Atlanta...still he had a pretty amazing career. There are four AAU guys up there...Boozer was one of them and he went on to be decent in the NBA (what's his relation to the twins coming in at dook next fall anyway?). Adrian Smith played some NBA and Imhoff became a journeyman (nicknamed Big Dome) and was the starting center the night that Chamberlain scored 100.

When Bellamy played for the Hawks he okayed with three other players who were high school stars in North Carolina: Lou Hudson, Herm Gilliam, and Pete Maravich.

Competitive people just don't stop being competitive when they retire. Gambling is a common outlet.

Btw - this 1960s U.S. Olympic team is considered the greatest amateur basketball squad of all time.
Not one ACC player on the roster. Surprising. I got old enough to follow college basketball in the 80's and the ACC was pretty dominant. When did the ACC start getting really good?

Off the top of my head I’d say there was a mid-to-late ‘50s ‘good’ period then a downturn around the payola scandals with a resurgence around ‘66.

After Dean Smith rebuilt the UNC program in the mid-60's, Norm Sloan was hired at NC State (1966) and Lefty Driesell left Davidson for Maryland (1969). Those three became national powerhouse teams in the 70's and beyond. Carl Tacy built some very competitive Wake Forest teams in the 70's and Terry Holland made UVa a contender in that time frame as well.

Lee Shaffer was a 2nd or 3rd team All-American in 1960. His teammate, York Larese, was an honorable mention AA.

They were the only ACC players with any All-American honors in 1960.

Kinda silly that this illegal.

Kinda silly that this illegal.

From the first article:

One of the defendants hired young women who, in exchange for tips, served drinks and provided massages and “offered companionship” to the poker players, according to prosecutors.

“The women were charged a ‘tax’ – a percentage of their earnings from working the games. Chefs, valets, and armed security guards also were hired to staff these illegal poker games,” the statement said.

The Israeli man faces separate charges including marriage fraud and lying on immigration documents. He is suspected of conspiring with a 35-year-old Los Angeles woman to enter into a sham marriage for the purposes of obtaining permanent legal status in the U.S.

Well, that part isn’t great.
