I think best case scenario is a Katrina event, but to an obviously more isolated area, which is terrifying enough as it is. One of my students is Jamaican; I am worried for his friends and family.
One of my employees is from Jamaica.. Told him don't stress about work this week.

Feels like Maria and Puerto Rico

Hurricane Forecasters Warn Melissa Could Be ‘Potentially Catastrophic’ for Jamaica

Authorities across the Caribbean opened shelters and evacuated residents from low-lying areas. An ‘unprecedented’ amount of rain was expected through the start of the week.

“… Jamie Rhome, the deputy director of the Hurricane Center, used some of the forecasting agency’s strongest language yet to describe the conditions the storm is expected to bring as it lashes Haiti and the Dominican Republic with days and days of heavy rain while sitting nearly stationary nearby before eventually moving over or near Jamaica.

  • On Sunday, Mr. Rhome urged residents in eastern Jamaica “to be wherever you are going to be and be ready to ride this out for several days.” He said the combination of the slow moving system and rainfall in excess of three feet “is going to create a catastrophic event” for Jamaica. Widespread power outages, disruption of communications and impassable roads are likely.
  • Severe warnings were also in place for Haiti, where “catastrophic flash flooding and landslides” were anticipated. Three people were killed in a landslide near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the authorities said on Thursday, and The Associated Press reported at least one person had died in the Dominican Republic.…”
