Thom Tillis will not run for reelection in 2026

The Republican Party has been dead and buried for a few years now but this is essentially the pissing on the grave of the old GOP by the new authoritarian party. When someone like Thom Tillis- as classical of a conservative as you can possibly hope to find- is booted from the party, you know you’re fucked.

Congrats to Senator Roy Cooper or Senator Jeff Jackson! (Hopefully, obv).

Trump broke him, apparently.

Hate to defend Tillis too much but almost everything Trump has said about him and the State of North Carolina is a lie, so it would be unfortunate if that actually broke him. I have a feeling this has been a long time coming.

My guess is he's looking at the polls and sees the writing on the wall. I'm guessing we will be seeing several more GOP retirements in the next year.

Agree with you. I don’t really know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, though. On one hand- and on paper at least- you would like to think that the retirement of “normie” republicans and the likely inevitable replacement of them by far right lunatic candidates, should theoretically help the Democrats pick up a lot of congressional seats next fall. On the other hand, it’s not like the Democratic Party is doing so swell right now and the retirement of the few remaining normie Republicans means that there will be fewer and fewer and fewer barriers and obstacles to all out far right nuttiness in the GOP. Kind of a double edged sword, I reckon.

I would actually love a chance for most North Carolinians to learn just how terrible Moore and Hudson are. But I’d definitely rather have Cawthorn running for the Senate seat.

ETA — Also, Moore would have a tough time criticizing Cooper’s record as governor, since Moore was the one actually determining NC policy for the vast majority of those eight years.

I can’t say for certain but I’d think after a politician was just murdered politicians that are targeted by trump realize that increase in death threats is more serious than it used to be. I really don’t want to believe we’re on our way to this just being the norm now.

When trump claims comey knew exactly what he was saying with the “86” tweet it’s because he knows exactly what he’s doing with his posts. The pardons signaled to the nut jobs that he’s got their backs (whether this is true or not doesn’t matter)

It has been. Combine what is surely a morale-busting work environment, having to kiss up to people like MTG or Markwayne Mullin, and the high probability that he will lose an election in a Dem tidal wave environment. I'm only surprised that he didn't announce it before.

Susan Collins, you're up.

I think we can beat Vivek in Ohio if he runs. Basically what people know about him is DOGE and trollish behavior.
