Starting this thread for my buddy @Callatoroy who requested it on another thread.

We can discuss the merits and demerits of Trump 2.0 policy implementation, and per @Callatoroy’s request, give props to Trump if and when he deserves it.

I’ll start:

I think the policy of blanket pardoning violent criminals was a terrible policy move. It completely undermines the “party of law and order/Back the Blue” claim.

I think that the policy of reflexivity blaming a horrific aviation tragedy on “wokeness” “DEI” “Obama” “Hillary” is unbecoming of a person who is supposed to provide leadership, guidance, and unity amidst tragedy.

I think that the policy of antagonism as it pertains to our democratic allies in Europe is awful, and appeasement as it pertains to Russia (whom I consider to be the biggest geopolitical foe of the United States), makes the world less safe and forfeits so much of the strength and leadership projected by America in the post-WWII era.

I think that the policy of slapping massive tariffs on our two closest neighbors, trading partners, and friends is horrible economic policy and will directly lead to skyrocketing prices and inflation, and possible economic recession.

Props to Trump: he hasn’t used our nuclear arsenal, started a war by tweeting, or used the military on U.S. citizens. Also, and in all sincerity, I applaud the Lumbee tribal recognition.

Blanket pardoning wasn’t just bad but terrible.
Comments on plane crash stupid

The rest some disagreement except for Lumbee recognition

Even blind squirrels find nuts from time to time so I genuinely like the idea of this thread. And I also think this board is prone to kneejerk reactions that every single thing he does is horrible, when the truth is that only most of it is. He's a vile human being but I like the idea of discussing his policy decisions objectively.

I applaud the Lumbee tribal recognition.
Are we allowed to fact-check claims of good stuff. Because he fell well short of actually recognizing the Lumbees. The White House memo describes the EO as follows:
  • It directs the Secretary of the Interior to submit a plan to assist the Lumbee Tribe in obtaining full federal recognition through legislation or other available mechanisms, including the right to receive full federal benefits.

Thanks for the fact-check. Did not realize that. That’s helpful context.

I'm thinking maybe Trump is wanting to get back in the casino biz?

I expect we’ll see numerous American Indian tribes oppose Lumbee recognition. The Eastern Band of the Cherokee certainly will (see casinos in NC). Many other tribes will; see a pie of money that doesn’t much increase be divided into smaller slices.

Question: why should the Lumbee be recognized? Are they an indigenous “tribe?” What evidence exists that they are an indigenous “tribe” rather than a group of white, slave, and American people who used the swamps of the Robeson County area to separate themselves from colonial and antebellum North and South Carolina?

If they’re an indigenous tribe, they deserve recognition. Are they one?

One Trump officials blame/credit to Elon Musk going rogue.

Musk team’s push to gut federal workforce bypassed key Trump officials

Billionaire Elon Musk has worked behind the scenes on an initiative aimed at depleting the civil service, prompting questions about its legality.

“Billionaire Elon Musk’s influence over a traditionally nonpartisan agency that oversees the federal workforce culminated in the government’s stunning proposal Tuesday offering employees an inducement to resign, according to four people familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal talks.

… Musk’s team also was critical to building the system that sent an email from “hr@opm.gov” to most federal employees across a dizzying array of agencies — a capacity that had not existed before last week. Musk touted the offer on X soon after it hit employees’ inboxes, arguing it was a crucial first step in reorganizing a federal bureaucracy he has long characterized as lazy and disloyal. The email emphasized the importance of a “reliable, loyal, trustworthy” workforce.

… In addition to the personnel office, Musk allies are now running the U.S. Digital Service, a White House office that a Trump executive order renamed the U.S. DOGE Service. Musk’s lieutenants have been interviewing the existing staff of that agency, asking detailed questions about their operations and expertise, said two other people who also spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations. One area of focus, according to another person familiar with the talks: gauging workers’ views on DOGE, questions that have raised concerns of a loyalty test.

Top political officials at the White House budget office were not consulted about the offer, several people familiar with the matter said. Neither were the agency’s career staff. The career staff at the OPM also were not involved in drafting the proposal, the people said. …”

This could all blow up in the administration’s face in multiple ways. Me thinking that is a possibility doesn’t make it a loss for Trump. MAGAs predicting that it will be good doesn’t make it a win.
I’m willing to see how this plays out.
Isn’t Trump already backtracking on this due to the employees at the FAA also getting the proposal (I think I saw that somewhere but could be wrong).

Mortgage interest rates remaining artificially high due to Trump tariff talk. All he had to do was do nothing and homeowners could be saving hundreds of dollars every month.
Big L, especially since this is 100% due to his actions and not outside market forces.

It may still work but at best this is an incomplete grade on Elon’s “fork in the road” resign or die approach. I actually have no doubt there is bloat in the federal work force that could be streamlined. Just not so sure this blunt force trauma approach is going to work well against a workforce with more significant employee rights than Musk deals with in much, much smaller (compared to the size of the Federal Government) businesses.

yeah donald dump all mouth but he knows his base 100% and feeds them perfectly

so no one giving him credit for sending military to cali to turn the water back on? lol

It directs the Secretary of the Interior to submit a plan to assist
A plan to assist sounds a lot like concepts of a plan. Also "directs the Secretary to submit a plan" leaves an awful lot of wiggle room to do nothing but still be able to claim credit for doing something. More vague qualifiers in there than a yellowjacket post...

I’ve said it a few times in different ways, but competent organizations cut fat with a scalpel, not a hand grenade. The way they are going about it is stupid (imo), but I’m not going to call it an L until we see the results.
But no way do we count it as a win yet.
