TONIGHT!! Biorhythms: Exhibition v Winston-Salem State

we seem to have some better pieces than last year but you cant win big w/o a good pg and we dont have one unfortunately. another bad recruiting job by our staff.

Couldn’t watch the game last night, but I did just watch the highlights. And looking at the box score, what’s missing on here are the turnovers of which Heels had 19. Obviously too many, and if there’s one stat to look at which may be pointed out as to having cost us the game, this may be it.
However, eight of those turnovers came from non-starters, guys who did not see a lot of action. Also, 5 other TOs came from one starter - Stevenson. But other than that, I thought Jarin played ok, and he did hit two threes, which is a lot considering the entire team only had four. That may be the other stat to look at as to what cost us the game. Poor outside shooting.

Zayden’s stats look pitiful, he only got four minutes, And he was not shown on the highlights. Committed one foul, had three turnovers, 0 rebounds 0 assists, 0 pts. No wonder he only got four minutes of action.

All that said, I liked what I saw from the highlights. And if Luka gets a chance to play and if he’s a Baller as people say, I think I’m going to like watching this team moving forward.
 
Phil Ford, Ty Lawson, and Ray Felton are the modern archetypes of the Carolina point. Kendall Marshall and Ed Cota sort of make for another category of pass-first points. I’d put Joel Berry and Marcus Paige in a ‘want-to badly’ category of their own as well.

Where Evans might fit remains to be seen. I’m not ready to write him off as a failure yet.

Assuming that UNC still retains key elements of the Dean Smith approach we can also look at some times when the point was not manned by a dominant player.

Thinking back farther than most I note that the Miller/Scott teams did not have such a player.

The Karl/Previs backcourt was one where the point was pretty interchangeable. Jimmy Black played tough defense and kept the ball moving.

2011-12 won 32 games and didn’t really have a true PG.

2018-18 won 29 games and while we had Coby White at guard he wasn’t a point. He and Kenny Williams kind of shared the positions a la Karl/Previs.

Yeah we had 19 TOs - at least 9 of them avoidable I’d say - correctable hopefully.

I don’t think High is gonna hit it this year. But I do think James Brown will be a good back-up. I’ve noticed that he learns well and those two moving screens he set - terrible errors - are, I suspect, a thing of the past now.

Bogavac will fill some gaps that need attention I believe.

No worries in stat screen shot… I figured that was best available at the time. What was good to see was hardly any TOs from the top 4 guys…

Agree High was low… but as pointed out perhaps we shouldn’t read too much from one exhibition game. Not so sure about Brown either, but if we get Luka on the floor, Brown High may not see much action anyway.

Except he didn't "literally" dunk over Stevenson.

That was the inbounds play where Stevenson went for the steal and Keita had a wide open lane for the dunk. That pic is showing Keita twisting on the rim after the dunk and Stevenson running under him to try to get to the ball to inbound it.

The dunk itself was completely uncontested.

People struggle with “literally” these days.
 
With so much of the season hinging on Wilson yesterday was a pretty good sign

Guard play seemed as expected, which is to say not great. Dixon and Evans look like the same player

I worry what happens with Veesaar in foul trouble because High and Brown aren’t it

Didn’t really notice Powell much, good or bad. I recall one made three and the nice lob to Trimble

Trimble still can’t shoot. Took a few end of shot clock 3s off the dribble everyone knew weren’t going in

I’m not sure how many second chance points they ended up with, but it was far more than the majority of games last season
