Wishing Drake all the best as he plows his way forward, trying to earn a spot on an NBA roster. Once a Heel, ALWAYS a Tar Heel! That goes for all of the other Tar Heels who left the team early to try their hand at the next level. Marvin, Tony, Harrison, Coby, Cole, MJ, James, Day'Ron, Nassir, Vince, Antawn, etc. etc. There's been more. And all of them had their legit reasons for leaving early, and almost every single one had the Coach's blessing... even urging them to go!

But this is about all the transfers who left Chapel Hill (and not necessarily just the past few years via the portal - I'm looking at you Cliff Rozier).
All the guys who left early and transferred to another team. Guys who supposedly wanted to wear the Carolina Blue and be a part of Chapel Hill (wanted to be part of the family - wanted to hang during the summer pick ups will all of the legends - soak up some of that MJ mystique - wanted to win championships - wanted to play for a Hall of Fame coach, etc. etc.), but who transferred out... Fuck them. Screw 'em! Every last one of them.

I'm already seeing posts and comments across multiple sites talking about Cadeau or Nickel or Jackson or Lubin... about how well they played in "last night's game" for another team. And yes I'm talking about those before: Caleb Love to Arizona, what'shisname to Auburn, Puff, Dunn, etc. etc. ... Fuck them. I don't want to see that shit.

And yes, I know we have some who've transferred in from other schools - Stevenson from Alabama and of course Cormac and Harrison (who were really welcomed and stood out for the Carolina Blue - and those two wanted to be here, played well here and then either graduated from UNC or went on to the pros... they didn't transfer yet again to another school. Hello Lubincrous!)

I'm sure those other schools who lost transfers to us via the portal don't want to read internet posts about how well they did or are doing in Chapel Hill. I'll bet Stanford didn't like seeing Harrison doing so well here and helping lead the team to all those wins and a Sweet 16. I'm sure Stanford fans were like: "fuck you Ingram" and who could blame them? Not me.

Finally, does the football team have posts.,comments and entire threads about how well football transfers are doing on their "new" teams? I know the football team has lost tons of guys via the portal, but are they getting the same treatment as Caleb Love got his first season away from Carolina, at 'Zona? I got really tired of scrolling past that crap. Yes, I really appreciated Caleb while he was here and how he helped vanquish the dark lord in derm, but I got no love for Love for abandoning ship like he did. Should have stayed and fought for his starting position like a man.

And that is one of the real, concrete reasons for my rant. They left. Let 'em go. Maybe they got more money to play in Rawlee... I don't know and I don't care. But please cease with all the threads and comments about "How well they played last night... see what we lost? Why didn't Roy or Hubert play them (pay them) more?" "Gee, I sure wish we still had Caleb!" Gag me... just STFU with that shit!
 
Eh this feels a little harsh. It’s a situational thing for me. A lot of times it’s just best for both sides to move on, and for all we know the team might even be the party encouraging the split in some cases.

Caleb Love is a a good example. Frankly I don’t know if UNC even gave him much of a choice to stay after the 2023 season, but I think both sides benefited from him going to AZ. I still followed and rooted for him there because his 2 games against Dook were just that awesome.

In most cases though I agree that actively rooting for players that transfer is kinda corny. I don’t wish them any ill will, but I’m not on pins and needles hoping that they make an all conference team either. I do think it’s interesting to track how they perform in their new roles to see if they are noticeably better or worse.

Slightly off target but within the ball park. I wrote this in 2022. Obviously times have changed from the 1960s...even from 2022 for that matter. But this is history.

Here’s a little bit of college basketball history. Ian Morrison (#30 in the photo below) transferred from Dean Smith’s UNC Tar Heel’s in June, 1965. In 1963 Morrison was a Parade High School All-American with Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) along with future fellow Tar Heel Great, Bobby Lewis. Morrison averaged 20 ppg on the Carolina freshman team & was a part-time starter as a sophomore on the varsity. He scored 20 versus NYU & 24 against Indiana that year & had a bright future at UNC. Over the year his GPA was 3.5 in the classroom & on the court he averaged 6 points per game. Morrison was a scorer but Coach Smith commented publicly about his growing defensive prowess during 1964-65 as the Tar Heels, led by NCAA All American Billy Cunningham, experienced a fairly successful 15-9 season (2nd place in the ACC with a 10-4 mark).
During the summer of 1965 Morrison’s father announced that his son was leaving Carolina to play closer to home. He eventually chose Florida State where he roomed with All American Dave Cowans, scoring at an 11 ppg clip. He left following that season & played basketball for two more seasons for a traveling Navy team. Losing Morrison was a blow to Dean Smith’s program — Morrison was a high profile recruit & had great potential. But Coach Smith never expressed any hurt feelings & later when Morrison became a successful high school coach in Tennessee, the Seminole transfer frequently worked at The Carolina Basketball School in the summers as a shooting instructor.
I don’t want to be overly moralistic nor finger-wagging but the philosophy so successfully applied to his career as a basketball coach of Dean Smith can be a pretty good measure to hold up as we work our own way through life & fandom. Ian Morrison left Carolina in search of a different set of circumstances - ones that he & his family deemed best for his own personality & goals. Others like Larry Davis, Steve Krafcisin, John Brownlee, Clifford Rozier, & Lynwood Robinson acted similarly & departed Coach Smith’s teams & UNC. Players likewise made the tough decision to leave Coach Williams’ teams on occasion.
Here’s to asking all the Tar Heel faithful to consider how Coach Smith responded with dignity & respect at a crucial moment in his young career, when a player for whom he had hopes & plans & with whom a mutual commitment had been made, chose a different path. Attached here is an interview with Morrison from 2015 in which he remembers Coach Smith & the lessons that he taught. Note there is no enmity, that none was shared nor were there sentiments of disloyalty but rather a friendship born of the original common interests that endured for decades.

 
If the staff sits a player down and basically lets him know that he probably should leave if he wants PT - and that his NIL number is going down if he stays - then it's hard for me to blame the player in that case. Some of these guys really want to stay and be Tar Heels, but in this era you can't sit at the end of the bench making peanuts anymore if you can contribute to another team. It's a different era, and my feelings toward these players have been muted by that. I can't imagine loving or hating any of these guys as much as I used to.
 
Would be hard to disagree more with the OP. But FWIW, Caleb was run off. Also Vesser has said Caleb is a big reason he is in CH.
 
Letting these former players and posts on them live rent free in your head seems to be a poor use of brain bandwidth.

That goes for those who feel like they need to look at former players stats at their new school and post them.

Everyone would benefit from reading "the subtle art of not giving a fuck"

The story I heard about Cliff Rozier is that Phil Ford brought Rozier into Coach Smith's office and told the coach that Rozier was unhappy with his playing time and was considering transferring. Coach Smith picked up his phone and said, "Clifford, I appreciate your concern, and I am more than willing to call the coaches at the schools you are considering and give you a good recommendation."

There was also a bit in there about Rozier wanting at least X touches a game and less emphasis on playing hard-nosed defense. A comment along the lines of “those coaches demand defense, too.”

I’m ok with this take. Maybe “track them in their new roles” out of curiosity, but don’t actively root for them… or worse, continually post threads and comments about “wow! Did you see what so and so did last night for moo U! Wow! And to think we had that talent here!” Gag me.
 
I don't like it. But I look at it as don't hate the player, hate the game. The NCAA needs to make the players have contracts with buyouts and clauses for leaving so the players don't jump from team to team every year.

This is a good take too. And I have no problem if a kid feels he can make more NIL and perhaps get more PT elsewhere, that’s all well and good for them. Or like somebody said in Caleb’s case he may have even been shown the door. I get all that. But the fact remains, they can’t be viewed as “once a Tar Heel always a Tar Heel”. No. They gave that up and I reserve the right to not give 2 shits about them anymore.

It’s just the consistent posts, threads and comments on various sites and boards… and not necessarily in this board, this board is not that much of an issue with the subject. Other Tar Heel websites, other social media, friends sending me emails of this guy did this and this guy did that.

And it’s not “living rent free in my head” alluded to either. I’m not ranting on the subject just because…. I’m venting because it seems to be “a thing” and that OTHERS seem obsessed with it.

Also, I’m not “hating” on any particular player - except I may not particularly care for where Lubin is now. He should know better, and he could have landed somewhere else for similar PT and NIL. It’s as if he chose that place as a mean spirited fuck you to Hubert, the team, the fans and the University.
