Tropical Storm Erin —> Cat 5 Erin

If these types of hurricanes continue (very rapid strengthening into megahurricanes) then pretty much every coastal town in the Southeast is living on borrowed time. It's only a matter of time until The Outer Banks, Wilmington and the Brunswick County beaches, Myrtle Beach, etc. get devastated by a Category 4 or 5 storm if this indeed the new hurricane pattern.
Yea
there is not a damn thing you can do to stop massive destruction when one of these big girls hit

We could flee westward until we hit a tornado or a forest fire.

Every Trump voter: "It's always been like this. The only difference is the left-wing press is grasping at straws trying to get America to reject God's offer of salvation in person of St. Donald of Mar-a-Lago."

After the terrible flash flood in Texas that killed all of those summer campers there was an article I read that said that even some Trumpers were starting to recognize that weather patterns were changing (and not for the better), but that instead of admitting that scientists were right and that climate change and global warming real, they simply came to believe in the conspiracy theory that all of these flash floods and excessive rain in many parts of the country this year was being caused by cloud seeding being done by sinister Deep State operatives for whatever reasons. And it's still going strong, I see posts on social media about it frequently - only they are "in the know" and really understand what is happening to our weather. Instead of accepting the evidence and science, I guess it's easier to just create grandiose, evidence-free conspiracy theories to avoid admitting that you were wrong all along.

We have been lucky.

For some reason, a scene near the end of the movie "Erik the Viking" comes to mind every time I read about these right-wing theories that climate change is nothing but a Deep-State conspiracy to manipulate the "sheeple." It's the one where the island of Hy-Brasil is sinking and the King Arnuff character (as played by Terry Jones) says, "Everyone say calm! This is not happening!"

Uh oh. The Euro model has Erin closer to the coast. Tropical force winds get to the OBX. Might have been premature for meteorologists to say it was going out to sea. These things don't act like they used to. Look at how fast it went from a tropical storm to a cat 5 hurricane. And we have seen the models have not done well this far out and there can be big changes from one day to the next with the track the closer it gets to land.

The speed with which this went from TS to Cat 5+ is frightening. There are so many more storms to come this fall and some will hit the US somewhere, and could have a similar ramp up. I’m fearing bad things and a Trump FEMA response (ie nothing). It could be very bad.

They had a rough time with Beryl last July. You are correct in that rapidly strengthening storms, especially when the hurricane is at the high CAT end can be a challenge. A high pressure builds above them - like their own bubble. The models are assuming a ridge over the GoM and Louisiana will move slowly west allowing the Bermuda high to dominate. There currently are prevailing winds more westerly into the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf.

Euro AI spotted the westward trend sooner than the main Euro model. The GFS model predictions have been miserable this year with budget cuts, lost Mets, and fewer balloon launches. The NHC (HWRF) model looks too far east, closer to the GFS rather than the Euro. NOAA/NASA's HAFS-A and -B model progs are closer to the Euro. There would certainly be beach erosion. Time to be weather aware.
