You really believe evangelical Christians are comparable to fundamentalist Islam?

Google AI provides that proponents of fundamentalist Islam advocate a return to 7th century "pure" Islamic fundamentals, viewing Islam as a comprehensive, mandatory legal and political system for society rather than just a personal faith.

Tenets:

Literal Interpretation of the sacred texts
Comprehensive Sharia Law: Islamic law should dictate all aspects of life, including governance, politics and the economy.
Khilafa: The goal of establishing the state governed by religious authority
Anti Western sentiment: The desire to eliminate "corrupting" foreign influences and Western secularism
Jihad: Mandate for action, often emphasizing militancy to defend or spread Islam.
Return to Origins: A focus on purifying Islam by returning to the practices of the first generation Muslims.

Doesn't sound compatible to Western societies to me.
There's a huge misconception on the Left. That misconception is that, deep down, we are all the same and we all want the same things. We just want freedom and financial stability and the opportunity to succeed in life.

That is wrong as some western European countries are finding out the hard way.

Cultural hegemony has ultimately meant, at least in part, cultural appropriation.

Acting as if cultures exist in silos ignores history.

MAGA/Fundamentalist Christians:

Literal interpretation of sacred texts
Biblical Law basis for secular law
Christian Nationalism
Anti American Democratic principles by promoting an authoritarian regime
Returning to a time in the past that THEY have determined to be better (and favors white Christians)

Yeah, lots of differences.

So, you're saying that if they shed the culture that makes them incompatible with Western culture, and take on a different culture that is compatible with Western culture, they'd be compatible?

Charlie Day Ok GIF

Also @Gmonet
They are no more incompatible than any other fundamentalist group. It shouldn't surprise anyone, but you have no idea what you are talking about with regards to Islam.

You haven't been paying much attention to Evangelical Christians if you think this is dramatically different from what they want. Just substitute "Christian" for "Muslim" and "liberal" for "Western."

They absolutely are. Fundamentalist Christianity might encourage/require a woman to be primarily a mom/homemaker and to generally submit to the man as the "head of the house", but fundamentalist Christian men don't force their wives to live in burlap sacks and beat them if they dare to go outside without it. Fundamentalist Christian men don't deny females an education and, again, beat them if they dare to educate themselves or learn to read.

Fundamentalist Christian men may believe that homosexuals are going to hell, but they aren't going to murder them in public for it.

The irony.

This is not the case NOW, but it was the case not that long ago. It's as another poster said: you can't judge cultures independent from law and social structure. When the Puritans were in charge, there were witch trials. The difference is that the majority of English were Anglican, not Puritan, and so the Puritans never had the type of control they had, say, during the English Civil War.

Fundamentalists in Islam do not generally do those things that you cite. They do in some places. If you want to call THAT culture -- which is A strand of fundamentalism but not the same thing -- incompatible, I won't disagree. But those types of practices usually fall away quickly in a multicultural environment.

Meanwhile, look at Hasidic Jews. Did you know that Hasidic Jewish women typically shave their heads? then they cover their heads in scarves or shawls. the idea is that they should not be sexually appealing. It's the same idea. Does anyone say that Hasidim are incompatible with America? No, because they mostly keep to themselves.

If the news covered some of the more extreme Christian groups like they covered fundamentalist Muslims (including recognizing the vast majority of Muslims who are not) you'd be surprised.

What's your opinion of Hegseth's minister who thinks the we should repeal women's right to vote? Seems like he's pretty buddy buddy with the administration.

Man, I've seen a lot of own goals on here, but this one will be hard to top.

Yes, American evangelicalism in 2026 is 100% in support of every single of those tenets. Hell, 95% of Trump's cabinet supports every single one of those tenets.
Seven Mountains. It is core to Heritage Foundation, which means it is core to Project 2025, which means it is core to the current admin.

Wrong. None of us believe those things about Republicans.

So if fundamentalist Islam = evangelical Christian, would you prefer to live in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or Iran vs the most conservative Christian state, say for example, Arkansas? There is no fundamentalist Christian country on par with the countries named above. You really can't be serious comparing life and the laws in Arkansas vs the Islamist states?

You guys are grossly inflating the power and influence of evangelical Christians. They're mostly harmless.

So will you go on record as being pro separation of church and state? And therefore against all the push by Republicans to push Christianity in our schools?

So it’s only their lack of power hindering them? Ok, so you agree that their culture is similar to their Islamic counterparts.

Anyone who puts any credence in R. J. Rushdooney's The Institutes of Biblical Law is not harmless, they are anti American extremist heretics. One of the things that keep me from being an apathetic agnostic is it gives up the faint mental solace that there might be a Hell they can burn in. No one who believes in freedom, liberty, equality or anything but being White Christian male is literally open to the death penalty for being gay or atheist, and enslaved if you are black or a woman.

Btw, he was also instrumental in the growth of the home schooling movement.

Is this how you practice law? Jeez.

1. I would prefer to live in Arkansas, not because evangelical Christians are inherently better neighbors than fundamentalist Muslims, but because Arkansas benefits greatly from being an American state and has a standard of living far higher than those countries. Arkansas also is bound by federal laws that prevent the evangelicals from enacting the full version of their form of sharia law.

2. What fundamentalist Christian countries are you referring to? The US is probably the closest thing to a fundamentalist Christian country right now.

3. The vast majority of fundamentalist Muslims are also harmless.

Don't compare Afghanistan and Arkansas. Compare Podunk First Baptist Church in Nowhere, Arkansas with a madrasa in Tehran. The teachings in the two are remarkably similar.

I realize there are no fundamentalist Christian countries. Doesn't that tell you something? That's why I had to use the state of Arkansas as an example.

Don't think there are many honor killings in Podunk First Baptist Church nor are they likely to require the ladies of the church to wear burkas or risk death. Also, at the Wednesday night Bible meeting, doubt the Baptist young men are planning terrorists attacks for their holy jihad. Oh, and Podunk doesn't throw LGBTQ+ folks off of buildings. They just pray for their souls.
