Thought it was worthy of own thread. Signed EO to advance it. I think it might finally happen. Casino could float a lot of boats in Robeson county and sink a few as well.

Long wait almost over? Trump pushes for federal recognition of Lumbee Tribe

Whoa. That's wild, thanks for sharing, 79. As a RobCo native I feel like I've been hearing about possible tribal recognition for the entirety of my life but it never seemed to happen.

Do you know if the rumor is true that the casino may be built out there on that open field near where they built the new health department a few years ago? My late grandparents lived right across from the new health department on Country Club Road on the way to Pembroke and I spent years as a kid running around in that big open field across from their house.

What is the past "issue " with it getting turned down ? I think Obama for ex pushed it unsuccessfully........

You mean the DSS building? It is about 1000 yards from my house. I think if recognition comes the fight will be where to put casino. Should be on I-95 but there will be those who want it in Pembroke. My understanding is casino has to be approved in referendum by Lumbee, who are very conservative. But the money will get it approved. Interesting times.

Bluntly that the Lumbee don't have a very good idea from which tribe they're descended, and several of the tribes they claim to be related to deny the relation.

This is the stated issue, and DNA tends to back it up. The DNA tends to show mostly white and black DNA with a smaller percentage of Native American.

I think the real reason is probably that competing interests have better lobbyists and larger campaign donations.

Ahhh yes, yes, I meant DDS building! Wow, that's wild that your house is over yonder. Small world. My grandparents house was that little house with the red roof at 480 Country Club Drive that stands all by its lonesome at the corner of Country Club Drive and Glen Cowan Rd.

Drive by it multiple times a day. Do y'all still.own? I would think it has some value.

One reason the Lumbees haven’t received full recognition is the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation opposes it; as do numerous other Native American tribes. The Eastern Band opposes Lumbee recognition because the Lumbees might open their own casino. Other Native American tribes oppose recognizing the Lumbee because recognition will give them access to Bureau of Indian Affairs funds.

The Lumbee have no treaty with the US. In many ways, the Lumbee lack the historical record that other recognized Native American tribes have.

All this is correct.

I know that Robeson County has been known for a whole lot of things and many of them not good over the years, but personally I am thrilled for the Lumbee folks. They are good, hard-working, family-oriented people and hopefully the ability to build a casino will be a tide that helps lift all boats economically in Robeson.

From a political standpoint I would imagine this will solidify Robeson as a Republican stronghold in NC for quite some time (and I’m not saying that to imply that Trump’s granting them tribal recognition is wrong or bad; in fact, I outright applaud his doing so). But it is interesting to point out that it is exactly places like Robeson swinging to the right, even as the three big metro areas in the state become more blue, that has made North Carolina so tantalizingly close but yet so tantalizingly far away for Dems. The county went +18 for Obama in 2012 to +28 for Trump in 2024.

Yep. Robeson county used to be as faithfully democratic as you could get. But we are 70 percent minority and they are very conservative socially. It is quite interesting in a county as impoverished as is ours. When I became editor in 1996 some folks said I was too far right for this county. When I left they were saying too far left.

Congratulations to the Lumbee. The Waccamaw Tribe of South Carolina has been seeking federal recognition for decades. With almost no written evidence and the feds wanting DNA, recognition is nearly impossible. The Waccamaw are state recognized.
