The main reason is that the currently recognized tribes don't want to cut the pie another time. BIA ain't upping the pot just because of additions. While the Eastern Band Cherokee get blamed (they are definitely against it), the voting block in Congress against it are from Western States with more tribes currently getting a cut.

Yep. Robeson county used to be as faithfully democratic as you could get. But we are 70 percent minority and they are very conservative socially. It is quite interesting in a county as impoverished as is ours. When I became editor in 1996 some folks said I was too far right for this county. When I left they were saying too far left.
I am from Graham County. Everyone is poor. 100% Trump country.

Good mention of the Western States. I expect most senators from OK, ND, SD, MT, ID, NV, AZ, NE, NM, and more will oppose Lumbee recognition. This likely won’t come to a vote in the Senate.

I'm hearing they want a location on I-95 also. I'd personally love to see it on the SC line near Rowland. Intersection of 95 and 74 might make sense if the right real estate is available.

It's a great example of the power of conservative media. If you get people scared enough of the "others", they'll vote against their interest and well-being to be on the other side of the culture war.

Of course most vote against their interests, but they have been doing it since long before Fox existed. The last Presidential election that the county voted Dem was 1976. The last 12 elections have been Republican. Was Dem 1932-1952, otherwise Republican.
