Nycfan started a thread about Gaetz, figuring that it would spur enough discussion for a whole thread. And she's certainly right about that.
But I think it's also important not to lose sight of the big picture when we scrutinize individual selections. Trump's named a whole bunch of members of his cabinet now. There's a common theme, and I think it's a bit more insidious than people have been talking about.
Virtually everyone he has named to official posts are idiot performance artists. That's especially true at Defense and Justice, but also Homeland Security. Notice who hasn't been named to any department: Stephen Miller, Tom Homan, Boris Eps, etc. They are staying with Trump in the office of the president.
His plan is to turn the government into the equivalent of riding around in a garbage truck and fellating microphones. The people ostenisbly making the decisions will spend all their time in front of televisions. The real work will be done behind the scenes. This is the same playbook they used when trying to rig the census.
You'd think the GOP would get wise to it. I get that they don't want to cross Trump for fear of him ending their careers, but if they let Trump turn everything into a clown show, it will go badly and it will be an electoral bloodbath in 2026. Unless they are quite sure that there will be no elections any more, you'd think they would at least try to push back. Here's what's on the table:

- Crime will spike as law enforcement resources are utilized for deportations instead of fighting crime. The FBI and DOJ will be understaffed, and they will also be directed at revenge. Gaetz couldn't lead a department if Jesus himself were giving him step by step instructions.
- The economy is going to massively tank. We all know this, but it's only reinforced by the complete lack of seriousness of any appointees. I guess we haven't seen Treasury yet. My guess is that Trump goes after Powell when inflation hits.
- The US military is going to be weakened and rendered much less effective as a fighting force. If they complain about low recruiting levels now, wait until they are trying to recruit people into an army headed by a Fox News host.
