Latest from Heather Cox Richardson, he's trademarked Trump name for future airport renaming, yet to be determined. Said airport would then be required to pay him a licensing fee for use of his name, which would be millions.

She doesn't know what she's talking about. First, you don't trademark a name for just airport renaming -- you get the mark, or you don't. Second, I'd be shocked if Trump doesn't already have it trademarked. Third, ain't no airport paying Trump licensing fees to keep the Trump name.

Here's what she said in full. You may be right about the last point, but these applications look pretty specific to potential airport renaming.

On February 13 and 14, President Donald J. Trump’s representatives filed three applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to trademark his name for future use on an airport. As trademark lawyer Josh Gerben of Gerben IP noted, the application also covers merchandise branded “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” “Donald J. Trump International Airport,” and “DJT,” including “clothing, handbags, luggage, jewelry, watches, and tie clips.”

Because of the trademark filing, Gerben notes, any airport adopting the Trump name would have to get a license to use the name, potentially paying a licensing fee. Gerben emphasizes that while it is common for public officials to have landmarks named after them, “never in the history of the United States” has “a sitting president’s private company…sought trademark rights” before such a naming.

In October, Office of Management and Budget director Russell Vought withheld billions of dollars Congress appropriated for a tunnel between New York and New Jersey under the Hudson River, saying he wanted “to ensure funding is not flowing based on unconstitutional DEI principles.” Trump told Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that he would release the funds if Schumer would agree to name Dulles Airport outside Washington, D.C., and New York City’s Penn Station after him.

After a Florida state lawmaker proposed putting Trump’s name on the Palm Beach International Airport, Jason Garcia of Seeking Rents today reported that the Florida legislature is currently pushing through measures to change the name of that airport to the “Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The amount of money proposed in Florida’s budget to make the change is $2,750,000, but Garcia notes this is likely a placeholder: the budget request is for $5.5 million.

I posted a story about it yesterday. He wants an airport named for him and the one near MAL may comply. He has Los showed interest in having Dulles renamed for him.

His company just recently applied for several trademarks for a Trump airport or airfield. The airport wouldn’t pay him to use the mark but the airport would usually be the one holding the mark. In this case, the airport would incur the cost of renaming but the Trump family would own the mark for commercial purposes (t-shirts etc) and could theoretically license the mark to the airport named for Trump for the airport to sell Trump branded airport paraphernalia…

They want to trademark Trump Airport? Why? I know he has had interest in Dulles, the same way he has interest in the Kennedy Center name.

If some airport near MAL wants to rename after him, sure, see what happens. I ain't flying through that airport ever. I suspect i'm not alone.

“… Applications filed by the Trump Organization with the federal trademark office are seeking exclusive rights to use the president's name on airports and dozens of related things found there, from buses shuttling passengers to umbrellas and travel bags to flight suits.

The filings come amid debate in Florida over a state bill to name the Palm Beach airport after Trump and a dispute over funding of a tunnel between New York and New Jersey that is tied up with proposals that both it and Dulles International Airport in Virginia bear his name.

… "To be clear, the President and his family will not receive any royalty, licensing fee, or financial consideration whatsoever from the proposed airport renaming," the company said it in a statement, referring to what is now called the Palm Beach International Airport near Trump's Mar-a-Lago club.

The company didn't respond when asked if it would charge royalties for the use of the name at other airports in the future, or on merchandise listed for protection in the filings.

Josh Gerben, a trademark lawyer who uncovered the filings over the weekend, said the applications were the first of their kind he's ever seen.

"While presidents and public officials have had landmarks named in their honor, a sitting president's private company has never in the history of the United States sought trademark rights in advance of such naming," Gerben wrote on his blog. "These are trademark filings that are completely unprecedented."…”
