“A Northern Virginia couple is hashing out their next steps after the husband, a 13-year, disabled military veteran and nearly two-year information technology technician with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was fired Monday, as part of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce.

… Because they are concerned about possible retaliation and a likely appeal to the Merit Systems Protection Board, the couple asked WTOP not to use their names for this story.

The man pointed to the fact that his performance at FEMA was upgraded to “career conditional,” a step between one year and three years, and he was not a “probationary” employee. At three years he would have qualified for “career” status. He also cited his military service, disability status and exceptional performance reviews.

“I was all in the range of fours, which means exceeding expectations,” he said.

… The termination is complicated by the fact that last November they supported Donald Trump when he sought the White House for a second term.

“I voted for Donald Trump. But this is not what I was expecting,” he said. “We didn’t think they were going to take a chainsaw to a silk rug.”

… The man’s wife said they also believed his 13 years of military service in the Navy and Air Force Reserves, with an honorable discharge as an E-4, would have offered him more protection against DOGE cuts.

“I recognize there are a lot of cuts that need to be made, but this is not the one that you think will happen to your family,” she said.

“I encouraged him to take the job there, because he loved working for the agency, and I think it has a good mission.” …”

I'm trying to find my sympathy. I am genuinely trying.

“… The email created confusion across the federal government. One senior government official said some federal employees started checking with their own legal advisers about how best to respond. One Justice Department official sent out an email asking their staff members to hold off on responding until management could provide further guidance. And one OPM employee questioned whether the agency is allowed to give work orders to employees in other agencies.

… The move by Musk, whom Trump has tasked with overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency, comes after the president earlier Saturday posted on social media that he wants the Tesla CEO to “get more aggressive” with his role. Trump also has previously said he is authorizing everything Musk is doing as one of his advisers.

The White House said Monday in a court filing that the billionaire businessman has no decision-making authority and isn’t the formal administrator of DOGE.

Joshua Fisher, director of the Office of Administration that supports the executive branch, said in a recent court declaration that Musk has no “actual or formal authority to make government decisions himself. Mr. Musk can only advise the President and communicate the President’s directives.”“

So, let's just say, just for the hell of it, that not a single federal employee responds to Musk's email. Does that mean they'll fire all federal employees and we'll be left without a functioning government?
That does seem to be the end goal. Just gut the government like Elon did to Twitter and force the few remaining employees to work like dogs trying to do the work that originally was done by three or four times as many people. And it won't work, because the federal government isn't like Twitter (or any corporation, really), but they seem hellbent on trying.

So I’m guessing this will all be fed into an AI and they will try to determine who is working and who is not?

I kind of hope that is what they try

I feel awful for those who are impacted that didn't vote for him but I'm thinking of how to get out of this hell ASAP

What's so infuriating about all these stories - and they're now a daily occurrence - is that there were plenty of people warning endlessly last year that this is exactly what would happen if he got elected. And guys like this just stuck their heads in the sand and didn't listen. And like so many other Trumpers, I'm sure he thought that Trump using "a fine-toothed comb" meant that it was liberals and others who would pay the price and get fired, not people like him. If you worked for the federal government (or in a job dependent upon federal funds) and you voted for Trump you're crazy and were voting to cut your own throat, whether you now admit it or not.
