This is why folks like lawtig and myself have always been skeptical of this "economic pain" narrative about MAGA. Their behavior doesn't match their rhetoric. And given the long, long, long history of white Americans, especially white Southerners, of using concerns about "economic anxiety" as justifications for oppression of others, I'd say it's mostly just cover for their real motivations.
