"the overriding priority is securing the future of civilization and the Moon is faster"?

Shouldn't taking care of the Earth and the civilization that resides on it be the "overriding priority"? What a dope. Can we just fire a rocket with Musk in it at the moon? If it hits its target, we measure the crater. If it misses, why not try again with Spaceman Bezos?

Give it a few years and I suspect Elon will be forced to settle for the #OccupyMontana mantra.

A lunar city right now would be an appendix for earth. It would occupy space for no obvious reason or purpose. It doesn't and can't have a viable independent support system. It's too close to the earth to really be any kind of refuge if there was a worldwide disaster. It would make more sense to spend the money on developing a real space station.

Yeah I cannot understand the value of a terrestrial development over an orbiting habitat. The moon offers effectively no resources of biological need and would seem to be more challenging to build on? Maybe the planetary protection from space objects?

Not sure the moon offers that much protection from the space rocks since its atmosphere is basically non existant , but I am not a scientist so maybe I am wrong.

Only thing I can think of is ready sources of minerals, but not sure how you refine them. I guess some nuclear reactor run factory?

You would need to build underground.

In re Colonization of the Moon: I can see some value in placing an astronomical observatory on the "dark" side of the Moon. But anything else strikes me as something with a lower chance for success than mining for green cheese. The money spent on "colonizing" the Moon would be better spent attempting to restore the Earth's ecosystems.

In fairness, Henry Ford and other great businessmen of his era were not exactly great thinkers either when it came to American diversity.

Not sure we should be looking to business leaders for moral clarity.
Fwiw. Ford financed the publication of The protocols of the Elders of Zion in the US. That, btw, is a blatant forgery by the Czarist secret police about a conspiracy for world domination by Jews. It was and is popular with antisemites worldwide.

Among many other antisemitic and eugenic beliefs he advanced.

Henry Ford started out paying equal wages to everyone, but over time his paranoia and anti-Semitism made him more and more racist. In the later years of his life the company was in a power struggle between his son Edsel (whom Henry treated like shit) and the union-busting head of security who would literally have workers beaten on the floor and dragged by cars. The more power the head of security got, the more racist Henry Ford became.

And while Ford paid the black workers the same as white workers (again, in the beginning) he allowed the company goons to keep them in ghettos so they wouldn't amass power in the greater Detroit area. Throughout Henry's reign, the company police would dictate how people lived, even off the job. Ford didn't want anyone drinking, wanted them growing gardens etc. He would send the goons in for spot checks for alcohol and other things he deemed as unhealthy so they could dock pay etc. As you can imagine, the more vulnerable populations in the company would see the visits more often.

Meanwhile Edsel was undermined all the time. He once built a new building for the accounting department; upon opening it, Henry fired all the accountants. Edsel also arranged to have a bunch of industrial boilers installed in one of the factories, Henry had them disassembled the next day. Henry lived to see Edsel put into the ground from stomach cancer, which Henry would publicly claim Edsel was making up, till it was pretty clear he was dying from it.

See, when you put Elon in historical context, he’s not that bad. :).
