We’re talking about a guy who has developed an “economic policy” of tariffs on everything will eliminate the budget deficit and allow him to virtually eliminate income taxes, so, no, he doesn’t get it at all OR he gets it but doesn’t care because his supporters don’t get it.

As a reminder, here is how Trump responded to a query about how he will make childcare more affordable earlier this month (and yes it careens into magical thinking about tariffs):

We’re going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take care of its people, and then we’ll worry about the rest of the world. Let’s help other people, but we’re going to take care of our country first.

Yet he didn’t eliminate deficits “in a fairly short period of time” during the four years of his presidency. Why would anyone believe he will (or can) quickly eliminate the deficit now? Do these foolish voters think he’s magic?

Well, most don't think and do believe in some form of supernatural intervention. It does cut down on the need to think and/or learn about natural laws and cause and effect since they are, in their world views, variables.

Trump is addicted to the idea that he can strong arm other countries into subsidizing America. Tariffs are just the new Wall. Mexico will pay. Foreign countries will be taxed like they've never seen but will continue to do business with us for some reason.
And I suspect that's some of his appeal to the MAGA chuds, who desperately wish they could strong arm other people into doing what they want and get frustrated when they fail. This accounts for a fair bit of the gender gap, I would think (though abortion is obviously the more obvious choice).

Too bad it's mostly false. It's hard to take anyone seriously on the topic of tariffs when they don't even mention GATT. The U.S. was dismantling tariffs and non-tariff barriers since 1950.
