Phil and Pete Hegseth have been involved in discussions about long term deployments of U.S. troops inside the USA:

“… The document, obtained by The New Republic, details plans for how the Trump administration could use the military to assist with domestic law enforcement as part of its mass deportation agenda for “years” to come.

… Carrie Lee, senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund, told The New Republic the contents of the memo are “disturbing” and outline intent to use the “military within the United States at a level not seen since Japanese internment.”

… He [Phil Hegseth] is now alleged to have written a memo that outlines a July 21 meeting between senior DHS and Pentagon officials discussing how the departments could coordinate “in defense of the homeland.”

That includes convincing leading military officials, such as Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, of the “urgency” of the so-called “homeland defense mission.”

The memo also suggests this ramping up of military deployment is needed as foreign gangs and drug cartels that Trump has listed as terrorist organizations pose a similar threat to “Al Qaeda or ISIS cells and fighters operating freely inside America.”…”

The focus has been on using military for immigration and drug law enforcement but we should keep an eye on whatever plan emerges from Trump to “clean up” D.C. more generally …
I remember as a teenager in the 1990s listening to an episode of Allan Handelman’s East Coast Live, where, like many other episodes of that show, his guest was a right-wing nut job conspiracy theorist. The guest warned that Bill Clinton would create a federal police force that would essentially replace local law enforcement agencies and carry out his orders. I can’t recall what that guy’s name was, but he was obviously a MAGA precursor. If he is alive today, there is no doubt that he is all in on the Trump cult. It’s funny how all these things these right wing conspiracy theorists baselessly warned us that democratic leaders would do— things they told us are very bad and we should be very afraid of— are now being attempted by Trump, and they totally embrace it.

One way the courts have truly shat the bed over the last decade is the refusal to scrutinize the declarations of emergencies. It is not beyond the courts' power to judge whether "emergencies" actually are. In fact, that's their core power. It's the most basic function of the judiciary to say, if the president says, "I must declare martial law because emergency", to say "NO THAT IS NOT AN EMERGENCY."

And it's where I have the absolute least confidence in the Supreme Court. If Trump were to say "partisan divisions are creating emergencies and therefore I must dissolve Congress," I have no confidence that the Supreme Court would put up any resistance because "unitary executive"

The stupidity of the unitary executive theory, that it is completely ahistorical, atextual and fails even the most basic common sense test, is wild considering that a fair number of legal scholars seem to think it's just dandy.

There is a cost to our approach to teaching law, i.e. not requiring a PhD and basically letting the corrupt supreme court justices determine credentials.

Republicans - nutjob or "normal" - have never been against government power, they've only been against government power they don't control.

They are happy to accept large, authoritarian government as long as they control it.

I wonder if Trump's authoritarian play makes it more likely that D.C. will get statehood IF Democrats ever take back power. Not that Trump wouldn't do what he's doing even if the District was a state, but it's just a lot easier for him.

Oh yeah. I've heard gun nuts for decades claim that they have to own lots of guns to "protect" themselves from the government. And it's always been clear to me that what they really mean is they need guns to "protect" themselves from a government run by liberals or people not like them. As long as people like Trump are running the government they can go after other groups of people all they want, and they won't give a crap.

Violent crime decreased in DC by 29% in 2024 vs. 2023.

More Archie Bunker armchair (unfortunately now behind the Resolute desk) federal overreach by Trump.

The Mayor of DC has nothing to do with the expansion and renovation of the Fed.
