Having relatively Junior military service or no military service at all for Secretary of defense isn't really that unusual. Obama had two or three that capped out at Lts or no military service. I think Trump had one or two the first time with no military service.

It is a civilian office meant as one check to ensure civilian control of the military.

I'd be much more concerned with his relative lack of running a large organization or his denial of being allowed to provide security for Obama's inaugural due to alleged right wing links than his lack of high rank.
You are right that military experience is not per se required. But all of those people you mentioned had deep experience within the defense department and/or intelligence agencies. Panetta was CIA director, had been in the House, WH chief of staff, OMB -- Panetta knew his shit. This assclown is no more qualified for the role than me. Actually, probably less qualified, since I can get a security clearance and he cannot.

There's no "relative lack." It is a complete and utter lack of any relevant experience whatsoever. He's never run anything. He has no demonstrated skills in the work that a Sec Def has to do. Imagine this assclown trying to manage an $800+ budget. Oh my God.

Feel free to ridicule me....I don't think Thune will let this one pass if it actually gets to "the Floor"
I think trump wants this as a "fuck you" to his enemies. I have total confidence he would never be confirmed but I see this as a recess appointment. gaetz doesn't have the gumption to stand up to trump if need be. gaetz is smart and sort of a bull in the china shop. his approach is what trump wants to go after his enemies. he is also an adolescent who will end up flaming out in that role.

Not really. As it turns out, when all of the votes are counted Trump is going to end up with less than 50% of the national popular vote. So not a majority.
And of course-as usual-like 65% of the eligible voters voted So -as usual-the president will win with a little over a third of the eligible voters voting for him

He might do OK with $800.

Emphasis on MIGHT.

She is on the scale of the gaetz pick but for different reasons. This job is one of the most important to me and requires the brightest minds in the country. Especially with trump as potus.
“Especially with trump as potus.”

That’s telling.

However, if he does try to get them all through recess appointments I will condemn that.
Who the fuck cares if you condemn that? I mean, look at you. "Oh, if he dismantles all the guard rails and takes full power for himself, I'll say that's bad." The time for saying that's bad was years ago.

You MAGA are like the people who declined the vaccine, got Covid, and then asked for the vaccine as they were being intubated in the ICU. Yeah, it's too fucking late for that now.

Sorry my TDS was acting up.
Some of these appointments are because Trump knows (or thinks) they'll be blindly loyal and do whatever he tells them to do, but I suspect that behind that is some typical Trumper trolling. "Who can I pick who will get liberals all upset and make them mad? Gaetz as AG? So be it!" Given that a huge part of Trumpism is trolling the libs, decisions like this certainly fit the bill. And yes he's a god-awful pick and will likely be a disaster, as will some of these other loons/criminals (or should be criminals, like Gaetz) that he's choosing.

My guess is Trump has another AG in mind, and is using Gaetz to gauge how in lock-step Republicans in the Senate are going to be with him. Gaetz probably won't have enough votes to get confirmed, and Trump realizes that, so he's got his true #1 option waiting to be recess appointed after Gaetz is shot down. Maybe Aileen Cannon? Or maybe he saves her for the Supreme Court. I dunno. But this acting AG will have two missions: Dismantle the federal investigations against Trump and punish Trump's enemies.

Seems likely And by denying Gaetz-he thinks-maybe correctly-that he will be granted the next choice. But it will be fun to see him fight with his own party
