Good Lord. No way this guy should get confirmed for dogcatcher much less FBI director.

Patel is a Devin Nunes crony who ran interference on Trump investigations in the House, so he got into the First Trump Admin. He later claimed that Trump as POTUS had declassified documents he later had at MAL but then took the fifth when called to testify under oath about that.

[Story from August previewing likely Trump appointees]

“… When Trump entertained naming Patel deputy director of the FBI, Attorney General Bill Barr confronted the White House chief of staff and said, “Over my dead body.”

When, in the final weeks of the administration, Trump planned to name Patel deputy director of the CIA, Gina Haspel, the agency’s head, threatened to resign. Trump relented only after an intervention by Vice President Mike Pence and others.

… This was what seemed to disturb many of his colleagues the most: Patel was dangerous, several of them told me, not because of a certain plan he would be poised to carry out if given control of the CIA or FBI, but because he appeared to have no plan at all—his priorities today always subject to a mercurial president’s wishes tomorrow. (Patel disputes this characterization.)

… Patel was ultimately denied a role at the pinnacle of the national-security establishment, but Trump has promised to learn from his mistakes. Should he return to the White House, there will be no Milleys, Haspels, or even Barrs to restrain him as he seeks revenge against his political enemies. Instead, there will be Patels—those whose true faith and allegiance belong not to a nation, but to one man.

… Patel, like countless others on the right, has learned the art of commodifying his association with the former president.

There is, for example, merch: “the official K$h wine!” ($233.99 for six bottles) and the Fight With Kash Punisher Intarsia Reversible Scarf ($25), which Patel wore for his remarks at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference. There are take a lap rhino tank tops ($35), justice for all #j6pc tees (also $35), and Kash Krew Golf Polos ($50–$53).

There are the books. Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth, and the Battle for Our Democracy is Patel’s account of his years fighting the “corrupt cabal” of federal officials trying to take down Trump.

And in The Plot Against the King, a children’s book, Patel tells the story of a wizard named Kash who sets out to save King Donald from the sinister machinations of Hillary Queenton and a “shifty knight.”

Head over to fightwithkash.com, and for a “special low offer” of $19.99, one can purchase playing cards (“the collector’s item of the century”) featuring the story’s characters; the king card belongs to “Kash, the distinguished wizard and corruption combatant.”

There is at least one song: Patel produced “Justice for All,” a version of the national anthem sung by jailed January 6 defendants and played by Trump at his first 2024 campaign rally. Patel professes to make no money from the song or the merch—he says proceeds go to January 6 defendants and their families, or to the Kash Foundation.

Few details are available about the charity, but according to Patel, it has funded meals for needy families and defamation lawsuits on behalf of Ric Grenell, Patel’s friend and former boss at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and Daniel Bostic, a “Stop the Steal” activist. (Just as this article was going to press, most of the merch was removed from Patel’s online shop.) …”

Florida man

He has been with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for the past 32 years. He was appointed sheriff in September 2017 and has since been reelected twice (unopposed most recently).

It sounds like he is respected as sheriff by many Democrats in the area, as well. Huge jump to run DEA …

Influencer-in-Chief has spawned a lot of mini-me appointees.

A few weeks before he was named to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recorded a sponsored social media video for Boxbollen, an at-home boxing game featuring a head-strapped bouncy ball.

“Boxbollen!” he screamed after repeatedly punching the little ball in a video posted on his TikTok account, which has since been deleted. Covered in sweat, he praised the product, which retails for $29.99, as “the ideal stocking stuffer.”

… Mehmet Oz, the celebrity doctor Trump named to lead the agency that administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs, told his millions of TikTok and X followers this week that they could reduce Thanksgiving stress “with adaptogens like ashwagandha from a trusted source like iHerb,” an online supplement store that says he serves as its “global advisor.” (An iHerb spokesperson declined to disclose the “financial nature” of its relationship with Oz and said there has been “no change to his affiliation” with the company since Trump named him to the role.)

… In the days since Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration to lead Trump’s Justice Department, the recently resigned congressman has started selling $500 personalized messages on the influencer-video marketplace Cameo. (On Black Friday, they were offered at a 60 percent discount.)

… Federal employees are barred from using their public office to endorse products, given the potential conflicts between their government work and for-profit interests.

… Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado), raised questions this past week when she briefly advertised her own $250 custom Cameo videos, despite House rules prohibiting representatives from being paid for appearances. Boebert’s account, which was listed under the “influencer” category, was removed Monday, two days after it appeared online. Her office did not respond to requests for comment

Before the election, Trump appeared on the comedy-interview podcast “Flagrant” and recounted a conversation he’d said he’d had with an aide recently about the supremacy of his online brand.
“I said, ‘Who is the biggest of all the influencers?’” Trump said, adding that the aide responded, ‘Sir, that’s the easiest question you’ve ever asked me. … You, sir.’”

Trump, a former competition-reality-show host who has licensed his name out for decades, has benefited from the attention by promoting branded products — including through posts on Truth Social. In recent months, he has used the platform to advertise Trump-branded Bibles, sneakers, photo books, “truly special” gold watches imprinted with his face and $10,000 eagle-emblazoned, Trump-autographed guitars. …”

He’s a psycho.
Check out the book Snakes In Suits, about psychopathy in corporate workplaces. Based on that Atlantic article, Patel fits the description of the workplace psychopath to a T.

The authors describe a "five phase model" of how a typical workplace psychopath climbs to and maintains power: entry, assessment, manipulation, confrontation, and ascension.

  1. In the entry stage, the psychopath uses highly developed social skills and charm to obtain employment in an organization. At this stage it is difficult to spot anything which is indicative of psychopathic behavior, and new employees might perceive the psychopath to be helpful and even benevolent.
  2. Once on to the assessment stage, the psychopath considers an employee's usefulness and could recognize them either as a pawn (who has some informal influence and can be easily manipulated) or a patron (who has formal power and can be used by the psychopath to protect against attacks).
  3. Manipulation involves the psychopath creating a scenario of "psychopathic fiction" where positive information about themselves and negative disinformation about others is created, where the role of others as a part of a network of pawns or patrons are used and groomed into accepting the psychopath's agenda.
  4. In the confrontation stage, the psychopath uses techniques of character assassination to maintain their agenda, and others are either discarded as a pawn or used as a patron.
  5. Finally, in the ascension stage, the psychopath takes for themselves a position of power and prestige from anyone who once supported them and discards the pawn or patron if they are no longer useful.

This is Patel's ascent in a nutshell. Trump's too, but Patel especially.

Which media folks will Kash Patel go after ?

Rachel Maddow
Lawrence O'Donnell

None of these picks surprise me. Trump made clear that if he was elected again his second term would be very different from his first in that he would no longer listen to the GOP Establishment (such as it exists anymore) in making key appointments. He's a horrible, ignorant, bigoted, and extremely vindictive human being who is steadily appointing other horrible, ignorant, bigoted, and extremely vindictive human beings to high government offices. And his appointments fit who he is and what he's turned the Republican Party into perfectly - a place where experts and experience and qualifications are scorned and reality-show stars, internet conspiracy nuts, and people who would have been considered fringe freaks just two or three decades ago are now in the mainstream of the party and taking the lead. Grifting from the base in every way possible is the order of the day. And going after your enemies and perceived enemies using the full power of the federal government is not only accepted but encouraged, the Bill of Rights and Constitutional safeguards and legal restrictions be damned. And this is precisely why so many people - not only Democrats but many Republicans and Independents, including nearly all of Trump's aides and advisors from his first term - were so worried about a lurch towards fascism and Orban-style (at a minimum) authoritarianism if he was elected. And yet here we are anyway.

Yeah but the price of a dozen eggs is $4 now instead of $3 so Orbanism here we come.
