TV Streaming series to talk about.

I enjoyed The Pitt s1 but found it to be quite melodramatic: on the anniversary of his mentor's death, his de facto son gets caught in a mass shooting and another doctor's drug addiction is exposed.... I mean for fuck's sake that's a year's worth of awful shit.
This validates my instinct to never watch this show. Misery porn ain’t for me. It’s cheap.

I wouldn't describe it as misery porn. I'd say it has a prestige TV chassis and a soap opera engine.
It's TV, so it has to be more than the simple day in the life of an ER doctor.

But it actually is very accurate medically, they have multiple doctors reviewing to ensure accuracy.

It also touches on many current events, like the episode with ICE and it touches on the issues with the medical system by discussing medical debt and insurance. It adds some humor like the guy that took multiple ED drugs and reached the 4 hours they advise against. The characters at ready to relate to, some you live and some you hate, but they seem well developed.

I really liked this series and I normally don't like the medical dramas.

I don't see this as misery porn. There are many uplifting encouraging cases.

True, in a real world ER, but would you watch a show strictly based on a real day in the ER where there would probably be less overall cases and many would be people with colds?

It isn't a documentary, and it has to be enough to keep people interested.

Euphoria, in my opinion, is misery porn.

I've witnessed many of the issues in that show in real life, but stretched out over years, not one weekend. But it is a TV show, they increase the volume to keep people interested.

Euphoria (s1-2) wallows in darkness past many people’s breaking points for sure. But it rings very true and never has me rolling my eyes in a “that would never happen” kind of way. It’s the darker side of modern HS/young adult life depicted very realistically.

It’s amplified and concentrated within a small group of characters, sure. But none of what happens feels contrived or manipulating the viewer.

The manipulation and contrivance is to me what constitutes misery porn.

I spent an afternoon and evening in an ER last November and there was definitely a lot going on in there during the ~6 hours I was there.
