Recall that the Democrats don't actually have any power to shut the government down. If they play hardball, the Pubs can just kill the filibuster or restrict its use and do what they want to do.
I thought Senate needs 60 votes involving 7 Dems.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it would appear the Dems have no power in this shutdown? GOP will go nuclear because they can keep all their members in line with the promise to claw back spending by the Executive Branch. Wow, that dictatorship is really upon us.

I don’t think the disadvantages to Democrats of actual shutdown have changed much since the Spring when they ultimately conceded their political losing hand.

Purely politically, all a government shutdown does is create a basis for Trump to pound Democrats with everything that goes wrong in the economy during the shutdown while actually using it to further dismantle government agencies he and his team want to shut down or cripple anyway.

Ultimately, the Dems will be forced back to the table to concede and get little or nothing for it because of the impact on people who rely on the relevant government services.

Democratic voters are spoiling for a fight, and trying to leverage shutdown talk is fine, but an actual shutdown is a losing tactic, no matter how much Democrats want a fight, any fight right now. Forcing a shutdown would be a political own goal.

White House to Pursue Mass Firings if Government Shuts Down

Office of Management and Budget director says reductions in employee counts will be permanent if a deal isn’t reached

“…The OMB memo instructs agencies to design reduction-in-force plans for employees who work for programs that have no current funding and have no outside funding source, and that are “not consistent with the President’s priorities.” This would be in addition to any temporary furloughs that happen during a government shutdown.

The memo from Vought says that any cuts made after the funding deadline would be permanent.

If Congress passes a short-term spending bill by the Sept. 30 deadline, “the additional steps outlined in this email will not be necessary,” the OMB memo states…”

If there is a shutdown, this seems like shooting yourself in the foot messaging-wise. Whatever chance there was that Ds would shoulder the blame for a shutdown, the admin just changed the narrative by choosing to be punitive to civil servants. If they follow through, the firings will lead the news cycles, and I don't think anyone will buy "the Dems made us do this."

Someone help me out... who controls every level of the federal government?

DOESN'T MATTER. Media will parrot whatever Trump says and the stupid populous will lap it up.

The Democrats have no cards to play. Then again we already lost the democracy so this is all petty details while the system crashes to the ground around us. This is the proverbial shouting which is left after it is all over. America had its chance and blew it.
