I bet the USA declares bankruptcy at some point.
The USA can't declare bankruptcy. It can try to renegotiate terms on some of its debt held by other nations, but the largest USA debt holders are USA institutions, companies, and individuals. Foreign entities own somewhere around 25% of US Debt. It seems really unlikely any type of restructuring is done - it would be too catastrophic to the system. Most likely things continue on the current trajectory for a few more decades as interest rates rise, inflation rises slightly, and wealth inequality continues to grow. We will have a few major crisis on our hands as a result of the Trump administration, but deficit spending is low on my list of potential disasters next to the eroding of the rule of law, the complete dismantling of the civil service, and the eroding of oversight and regulations. A fiscal crisis is certainly on the horizon as a result of Trump's war on the global economy - but that would be minor compared with a collapse of the us constitutional government.

The lack of participation on this thread by the several posters here who support Trump is incredible. Not surprising, but still incredible. Not a damn person has even tried to make an argument for Trump’s signature bill. How did we end up with so many house Pub wimps?

The bankruptcy filings over the next couple of weeks are going to be shocking. I sure as hell hope nobody here is invested in alternative energy.
Wellll, it is half of my legal practice, so I’ve got THAT going for me. But I’m less concerned about bankruptcies in the immediate term than the work drying up pretty quickly. Renewable projects have to commence construction in next 18 months to qualify for remaining tax credits, so we’ll see how that plays out. Certainly, absent radical change, my renewables project finance practice will be limited to compliance for existing deals and ???

The Summer of Trump!

…and still 2 months to go.

Anytime Ram jerker offer pops off to gloat about yet another inhuman Trump decision, eg funding a masked Gestapo, concentration camps, and killing poor people, I feel obligated to remind the board he’s a 60 ish year old lawyer, who allegedly “serves” people in one of their most sensitive periods, ie divorce and custody cases.

Wonder if there’s any personal bias filtered into that practice …

Trump now has a private masked police force with billions of dollars at its disposal. Do you think that force isn’t going to play a role in the next election? I’m really fucking worried about what we’re going to witness and experience relatively soon.
Agreed, Republicans are rapidly gaining the ability (not only with this but also the "national citizenship database" they're apparently working on) to really fix elections to their liking. Having said that, even if Democrats sweep to control of both Houses of Congress next year they won't be able to roll back the damage that's already been caused or stop GOP measures passed before January 2027 from taking effect, as Trump will likely veto any attempts to fix or reform what he's done since January 2025. And the Trumper Supreme Court can also possibly block congressional attempts to provide more oversight of Trump and his minions or obtain greater control of the federal budget - they've already clearly indicated they're willing to give Dear Leader pretty much a blank check on executive power. And, finally, as soon as a Democratic Congress takes office Republicans and Fox and other right-wing media will immediately begin blaming them for everything that goes wrong from January 2027 forward, including all the damage and suffering caused by Trump 2.0 & Project 2025.

I'm not saying that I don't desperately hope that Democrats sweep to control of Congress next year, but that's not going to fix this, it will only limit future damage. It's going to take winning back the WH in 2028, changing the makeup of the Supreme Court, keeping consistent control of Congress, and starting to win back control of state legislatures around the country for all this madness to finally end. And unfortunately that's going to take a very long time, probably.
