This saddens me.

In part, it’s because my Mom spent much of the ‘70’s traveling Eastern North Carolina helping create and establish Head Start programs in many of the poorest areas of our state.

For years, she did this work with two other women - a black pediatrician and a Jewish social worker. The group quickly learned that my Mom should check them into the motel and go get take-out.

One of the first ways they learned this was checking into a motel. “You’re from Chapel Hill. You have a n***** mayor.” Another lesson was walking into a restaurant and all conversations immediately ceased.

They often stayed in a motel 30-60 miles from any town they worked in on that trip. They always asked for their rooms grouped together. They parked their car AWAY from their rooms. Many times they’d drive two hours from Chapel Hill and return home rather than stay in the area overnight.

Certain whites in many of those Eastern counties strongly opposed Head Start - it was yet another government program for n*****s.

Which is insane but clearly would even be worse without the ACA. Do you want to have a discussion about replacing private health insurance or a discussion about the effects of the ACA limiting cost increases for private health insurance? They are two different discussions.
We'll be able to have this discussion as soon as two weeks from a decade ago. Cause that's when Trump is planning on releasing the details of the Republican healthcare plan.
