A proposed ban on intoxicating hemp products emerged as an obstacle Monday to ending the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said he would oppose a package that would end the shutdown because it closes a loophole that has enabled the proliferation of widely available intoxicating hemp products, hurting a growing industry in his state.

A provision added to funding for the Agriculture Department would close a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill that inadvertently paved the way for intoxicating products to be sold nationwide.

So to be clear:

• Democrats got nothing after holding out that long, but the promise of a vote
• they put a lot of people through pain of layoff and hunger with nothing to show for it
• the copium is that it will make the Republicans look meaner, which everyone already knew to begin with. As well as th eidea that they were never going to win so they were smart to give up when they did
• they refused to sign on to a clean continuation deal, and now have signed on to a bill loaded with graft and other policies that hurt Americans
• they have alienated a ton of their base by folding

I sincerely wish he could lead the democratic party.
I think Hakeem Jeffries has been a very effective House minority leader . I think replacing Chuck with Chris Murphy would be a big improvement as Senate minority leader.

The good news is Dick Durbin and Jeanne Shaheen are not running next year. Now Chuck at the least should step down today as Senate minority leader but him retiring would be even better for the Democratic Party.

I think Dems need a movement or a leader who take a page out of Bobby Kennedy Sr. (not Jr.):

1. Tough on crime - law and order

2. Unafraid

3. Can directly connect with working class whites and people of color.

I can't think of a soul out there currently who can fit this mold - but it is the winning combination.
3 is the sticking point. While there was a big racial divide in Senior's time, there was a large relatively neutral show me how this works element. That has now been polarized, politicized, proselytized or left disaffected.

And I'd trade 1 for someone who would identify what our real crime problems are and what causes them instead of one focused on punishing and imprisoning people for other people's profit.

This guy captures the reasons that I argue that Chuck Schumer needs to retire today and let the NY Gov appoint AOC !

No to #1. Learn the lesson of Bill Clinton who went "tough on crime" in order to will his reelection. Won the battle, lost the war. That crime bill lead to mass incarcerations for lengthy prison sentences for minor non-violent crimes of mostly minorities. The Democratic coalition has never been the same ever after.

I'm all for "tough on violent crime" and "tough on white collar crime", but history has consistently show that "tough on crime" in it's on the ground implementation is nearly 100% a license for law enforcement to punish minorities for minor possession charges and such, the like of which white people routinely are given a pass for.

It does occur to me that Schumer or more likely the Dem Senate Caucus thought this was the right time to end the shutdown and release Trump Pedo emails, coupled voting to release the complete Epstein files...

...and the Senate Pubs are taking the money grab before the collapse of the GQP or Coup, whichever comes first.

At least AOC will fight...although we're in the Trump Pedo news cycle which will continue through the holidays or when Trump attempts a coup.
