Broken clock is right twice a day.
My understanding is that this was a shadow fleet tanker. Didn't they just paint a Russian flag on the side of the tanker after the US vessels started following it?
EDIT: From NYC's post above it sounds like they attempted a switcharoo in real time by changing (or trying to change?) the registration to Russian during the thick of things. Interesting.
This is a dangerous game the US and Russia are playing. There's no limit to the number of ways this can become an exponentially worse shitshow.
Not to mention, even if it was a neurally flagged "shadow fleet" vessel at the time of the US seizure, it's not clear to me what the legal justification of the seizure would be anyway. This is the sort of thing you will need to prove in a court of law that you had the legal right to seize the tanker (regardless of how it was flagged).
EDIT #2: I am more than happy for the US to aggressively go after the Russian shadow fleet tankers. But the prerequisite here is that it needs to be done on a scrupulously legal basis. And this administration is making it a point of pride to flaunt both US and International law.

It would seem that registration should be a matter of public record. Somebody ought to be able to verify whether or not a ship of that name and description was registered and when. Now, I have no doubt there's a way to spoof that but, if so, you can bet whoever did is well ahead of us in plotting out what's going to happen. Since I wouldn't like our chances if we started off even, I don't see anything good happening for us out of this.
