Planned U.S.-Russia Talks Over Ukraine Throw Europe Into Crisis

France’s Macron convenes emergency meeting of military powers as Trump prepares to negotiate Ukraine’s future without them

“… President Emmanuel Macron held an emergency meeting of European leaders inside the Élysée Palace on Monday, moments after he held a 20-minute call with President Trump on Monday.

The flurry of diplomacy aimed to show that Europe still has a role to play in resolving the Ukraine war—even as senior U.S. officials traveled to Saudi Arabia this week for direct talks with Russia.

The idea that the fate of Europe might be decided without direct European participation has stung the continent’s capitals. It has also raised pressure on Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other leaders to define how they plan to contribute to any peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

In recent days, the Trump administration has asked European governments to fill out a questionnaire, clarifying whether they are willing to send troops into Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force and what other capabilities they can provide as part of a security guarantee for Ukraine. The leaders must also discuss how to increase European military spending and fund longer-term assistance for Kyiv.

For months European countries have dithered. Only a handful of European countries—Britain, France and Sweden—have so far signaled they are willing to send troops into Ukraine as part of a peace deal. When a core group of leaders gathered in Brussels in December, they shied away from any serious discussion of what security guarantees Europe could offer, deciding it was best to wait for Trump to take office and lay out his plans. …”

My god don is the easiest mark in the history of American geopolitics. Just an absolute noodle, waiting to get tied into whatever knot a marginally intelligent bad actor chooses.
Wordsmith Award of the Day for "Just an absolute noodle, waiting to get tied into whatever knot a marginally intelligent bad actor chooses."

Bravo, Healing. Well played.

So, Putin has flat-out brainwashed Trump. Cool.

Trump delivers another blow to Ukraine and a new boost to Putin

It looked like things couldn’t get any darker for Ukraine. Then President Donald Trump spoke up.

After cutting President Volodymyr Zelensky out of the first US talks with Russia on ending the war, Trump on Tuesday falsely accused Ukraine of starting a conflict that has ravaged its land and killed thousands of its people.

And in his most hostile comments toward the Ukrainian leader yet, Trump voiced yet another of President Vladimir Putin’s talking points — that it was time for an election in Ukraine — in an apparent bid to begin the process of pushing Zelensky aside.

The US president’s comments will fuel fresh fears in Europe, which was also excluded from the US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, that Trump will try to impose a peace deal in Ukraine that favors his friend in the Kremlin.

His remarks also appeared to directly contradict assurances by his own Secretary of State Marco Rubio after meeting the Russian delegation that any eventual peace agreement would be fair to all parties.

And Trump’s attack on Zelensky, who was hailed as a hero in the United States for resisting Russia’s Blitzkrieg on Kyiv early in the war, was a graphic sign of how the new American administration has reversed Washington’s stance of supporting the victim of the invasion and is now rewarding the aggressor.

“We have a situation where we haven’t had elections in Ukraine, where we have martial law,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Trump also claimed that Zelensky’s approval rating was “at 4%” and “we have a country that has been blown to smithereens.”

Reliable polling has been difficult in the middle of a war zone that has seen thousands of Ukrainians become internally displaced or flee the country. While recent surveys have shown Zelensky’s popularity dropping significantly from the almost universal approval he enjoyed at the start of the war, it’s nowhere near the depths cited by Trump.

The president also warned that for Ukraine’s views on its fate to be considered, it should have an election, saying: “You know, they want a seat at the table, wouldn’t the people of Ukraine have to have a say, like it’s been a lot of times since we’ve had an election?”

Question: if Trump has been flat-out brainwashed by Putin, how can you support anything he does? In other words, isn't it obvious that he's a weak stupid easily manipulated old man? That's not "his foreign policy isn't good." That's "keep this man away from everything" and "don't trust anything he says because at best it's dementia."

Like, if you believe that Putin brainwashed Trump, then isn't it attendant of you to be part of the resistance, not a bosiding message board antagonist?

Every president has had flaws and has done things I don't agree with. The fact that a president may be flawed in one area doesn't mean everything he does is wrong. Trump, going back to 2016, has always been infatuated with, if not jealous of, dictators. He's also always been susceptible to flattery, yet the Biden admin carried over some of Trump's tariffs on China.

True, a broken clock is right twice a day.

But here's an idea: the guy who is so easily brainwashed into believing that Ukraine started a war that began with its invasion maybe should never receive the benefit of the doubt. I assume, based on very long experience, from the outset that everything Trump says is a lie and all of his ideas are comically bad. That's the baseline. I won't apologize for that, because as I said, it's been true 95% of the time.

But sure, keep an open mind. Trump did enter some sort of order in his first term addressing balance billing by health care providers. I don't remember it now because Biden's more comprehensive regulations essentially subsumed whatever Trump did. But that was a good idea from Trump. I have no trouble admitting it, even as I continue to defend my initial presumption that he's always a mendacious dishonest narcissistic fool.

Why go out of your way to JCD for Trump if you honestly think he's such a mental midget that he can be brainwashed like that?
