I figured it would be good to have a thread dedicated to the portal and transfers. So far, Evans, Young, Denis, Powell, Brown and Dixon have entered the portal. I was hoping Dixon would stay. I wouldn't mind Powell staying, too, to have a guard off the bench. Evans, Young, Denis and Brown wouldn't be a big loss. Looks like they might need to get a lot of players from the portal, though, if all of them actually leave. Hopefully, Veesaar returns and Mingo and Adams still come.

I think the OP hits it on the mark. Veesaar, Dixon and Powell are the only players I'm interested in keeping along with the freshman recruits. If we can do that we'll have a solid foundation to building the roster for next year. I think High could be a decent player for us, but the baggage makes it so I think it's best if we just parted ways with the fresh start.

In regard to paying college players and letting them transfer at will without penalty, I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I think it is a good idea. College basketball long ago ceased to be a college thing. It's just a publicly financed showcase for NBA scouts. If the NCAA abolished the requirement to attend classes and treated basketball players the same way as they do other employees of universities, I'd be OK with that. Pay them. Give them health insurance. Give them paid vacation days and holidays. Pay them overtime for long road trips. It has been a LONG time since these Division 1 college basketball players were actual students. There is a reason why Rusty Clark, a Morehead scholar who had no interest in professional basketball, would sit in his hotel room studying before away games and periodically scream, "I HATE DEAN SMITH!" The current embodiment of student athletes in Division I college basketball is both a joke that should be ended and a mockery of all the students who have to study and pay to stay in school. I have enormous pride when a member of the faculty at any of the colleges I attended wins some prestigious award for his or her work at that college. If basketball players were employees rather than students, I feel certain my admiration for them and their accomplishments would be just as strong and sincere as that I have for distinguished faculty members. The mockery of the notion of "student athletes" in revenue generating sports should be discarded for the fraud that it is. However, if a "student athlete" actually wants a degree, then by all means, the university should bend over backwards to accommodate his or her desires.

ETA1: The only restriction I would place on the ability of student athletes to transfer is that they should not be able to transfer to another school after the season begins and be able to play for that school that same season. Just can't have star players transferring during the week prior to the NCAA Tournament. That would just be a step too far and just turn the Tournament into a multi-round all-star game, with the line-ups reshuffling every week. I don't want to imagine a UNC - Michigan NCAA championship game where Worthy and Jordan transferred to Michigan at half-time.

ETA2: Also, I see absolutely nothing wrong with "student athletes" executing a compensated 6 month non-compete addendum to their contracts prior to the commencement of the season.

I posted this on the other thread but think it may float better here:

What’s encouraging is the fact that several teams totally remade themselves into much better teams via the portal last season and I am optimistic that UNC can do something similar next year.

Obviously Michigan won the lottery via portal this past season. But look also at: Miami, Louisville, Nebraska, St John’s, Florida, Iowa, some others… we did ok too landing Veesaar.

With any luck at all Tanner and Malone can totally rebuild IMMEDIATELY via the portal and perhaps even talk Veesaar into a senior year with us, and hopefully also keep the top freshman HD successfully recruited.

It all depends on what $$ they are looking for. Dixon at 500K would be good. Dixon at 2.5M would not.

I don't know what Jarin is looking for, but I suspect we overpaid for him last year. I wouldn't give him more than a million, if that. Guy just doesn't do nearly enough on the court. He's not a guy who should command big money.

Stevenson will command more than $1 million on the open market. Versatile bigs who can shoot and defend and have stayed in college for four years (after being a 5 star prospect) don’t grow on trees.

yeah, i liked the other post about only really wanting veesaar but i'd also prefer to keep stevenson and dixon.

stevenson isn't a star but he does a lot of things well and can effectively guard almost anyone.
Well, obviously he can't effective guard almost anyone if you judge by our last game of the year. If VCU was intentionally trying to pick a matchup with Jarin covering their SG, that tends to suggest that his defensive versatility is overrated.

I don't think he's a starter on a good team. He's a guy who should get 20 mpg. How much should we pay for that?

Somebody will offer Vessar over 3 mill if he stays I imagine.
Every year NIL ticks up

Can Jarin shoot? Career 30% 3 point shooter and he's actually gotten worse every year. Is he really a big? He sure doesn't rebound like one. Nor protect the rim like one. Is he really versatile? I mean, I suppose he can do a little of everything, but is there anything he does well?

If he can get more than $1M, then I say let him.
