On the other thread the mention of chemistry came up. Michigan had it this season, we haven’t had it that much lately. Even Roy’s last few years seemed to lack chemistry.
If I may make a music analogy: in my jazz band, I draw from a lot of regional talent and my band line up changes constantly depending on who all is available for certain play dates. Sometimes I get a top notch player on trumpet for example, and his solos and playing are literally world class, But the other guys in the band don’t seem to get along with him. He’s a bit toxic. I don’t wanna hang around and have a beer with him after the gig. Some of those bad vibes spill over onto the stage while we’re playing.
And then, on other occasions, I’ll have somebody else on trumpet or saxophone (who may not be technically as good a player) but with much better attitudes, happy-go-lucky, great to hang with before, during and after the gigs, everybody has a great time on stage, and afterward having a drink etc.
Chemistry on stage or on the court; chemistry in the locker room or in the green room; chemistry on the bus to the game or carpooling to the gig is important and can be like night and day.
Roster construction in ability AND in chemistry is a thing and say what you will, HD simply didn’t have a lot of luck in the roster construction dept. - but neither did Roy in his last couple of seasons.
