And don't give me the "second contract" b.s. Longterm NBA success isn't guaranteed for a player like Veesaar. Yes, he will have a long professional career somewhere, but always take the guaranteed money.

I think that is an entirely reasonable decision, but that doesn't mean Veesaar's decision is unreasonable. He is betting on himself, which may look foolish in the long run to outside observers, but ultimately we can't get inside his head to understand how he weighs all the factors in play.

$4M can buy as A LOT... especially if we do not spend it all on centers, where purchasing power goes WAY down.
There is also a reason centers are the most expensive - they are extremely important. And we still need a good one, whatever we have to pay.

I can't fault a guy for wanting to go to the highest level. Flexel Lendeborg took the money to beat up on teenagers when he was 24. I find that embarrassing. Henri is good enough to play with the best and seems to want the challenge. He'll make many millions either way. He did everything - and more - that UNC could have expected this year and wants to fulfill his dream.

Sure, it's important to have a good center... but given the cost differential for centers this season, it may not be the best use of money to "go big" on your center and spend the money to make that postion your most elite player. It might make more sense to get a good center and spend the extra cash on an elite 3/4.

I don't think these guys live the college life as most people know it. They are professional basketball players. Plus, $6M can probably buy better entertainment off campus.
As much fun as I had in college, I also sort of took it for granted. I was always ready to move on, and I know a lot of my friends felt that way. (We were all foolish to feel that way but we were young and dumb.) And I imagine many athletes feel the same way. Not to mention, as much fun as an athlete may have in college, I’m sure that they think they’ll have even more fun making millions while living in a big city.

I think from a financial standpoint it definitely makes more sense for someone with Veesaar’s profile to stay in college. Sometimes these guys are just ready to move on to the next stage of life though.

I didn’t realize that Veesaar is about to get married until earlier this week. 22 years old, engaged, already been in college for 4 years, not even from the US in the first place and probably doesn’t have some deep sentimental attachment to a place he’s only spent 1 year. It makes sense when you think about it.
Not if he shoots 34% from 3.

Even early 2nd round picks send a stick around as someone that chose you and will develop you for their role... if they end up becoming a nice man you can make $60 million.

This was, by far, his best season in the storyline of getting a chance to play an excuse of the mess that was going on at Carolina makes a great story for a guy who just had that season.

If he doesn't get better(or worse), he could be ufa even in a weak draft year.

I think stay was his biggest risk... of course these are champagne problems.

Don't get me wrong. If Veesaar were in the pre-nil era as a borderline 1st rounder? Absolutely. Go right now. Full stop. If he was offered 100,000? Don't even think about. $500,000-2 million? Depends on the circumstances? But 6 mill? If the number that is being bandied around is real, then you have to take it unless you are surefire lottery.

$6,000,000.

Nah... unless you are really good or have no place in the league, it depends on where you land for fit and support.

Just hanging around the league 5-7 is worth the risk... can you make a little bit more money over two years than he would've put the one and be much more poised to get $50M - $100M.

*This is for late first rounders that could slide to guaranteed 2nd round contracts.

So we hired another coach with no college connection and we are struggling in the portal...well I am definitely not surprised.

Won't matter if seniors get another year. Fill the team with the best three-four 5th year players on the board willing to sign for two million each and call it a day. Three if we get Miika.

Why do you think we are struggling in the portal? We've been able to land pretty much every guy, or at least the backup candidate, we've gone after. Va Tech transfer SF, Utah PG, State SG. Kept Jarin from transferring. Henri is not a portal issue -- that is a traditional stay/go NBA decision. There is still a lot of talent to mine in Europe for the bigs positions, so I don't see the struggling at all right now. If this is still are situation in two months, I might agree with you. But right now, we've gotten pretty much an A level performance in the portal, at least a B+.

Eh, hope yoj are correct. Most likely my pessimistic outlook on UNC football and basketball lately.

I think we are closer to c+, right now, simply because we have a lot of positions to fill. It'll go up, sure - but there are, currently, several major deficiencies/ holes in how our roster is made up.

We are struggling. Fortunately, we also have several unique opportunities due to inroads made during both Hubert's tenure and thus far in Malone's and due to the potential fifth year rule. But it is never good to feel, in late April, that a roster is as incomplete as ours currently is.

I was always skeptical about how easy this transition would be. That said, I'm provisionally happy with the staff. Are we in that much worse shape than last year this time? I don't remember but I do remember that we were 3-4 games into the season before I was sure we'd be any good at all. We sure are unfinished and you all sure are bad at it but I still suggest a little more patience.

Hell, it might not work out this year. I still won't know if it was more the transition in coaching or player acquisition that was the problem. Expecting to get through the combination of both unscathed borders on the ridiculous.
