UNC Basketball Possible coaches - UNC hires ex-Nuggets HC Michael Malone

I assume this hire is not the homerun hire everyone was expecting, but there is a Carolina connection I'm told. His daughter is on the UNC volleyball team ?
He will be coming from an ESPN expert gig, so it will be interesting to see how he will build a coaching staff from scratch. Will he keep some of this year's assistant coaching staff. Is he ready to hit the ground running to go after the best players in the transfer portal relying on Tanner or some other GM he wants to bring in ?

Next year will be a very interesting basketball year. as will football's next year.

FYI I think we need to change his name in the thread title to "Michael Malone." Apparently he hates being called "Mike."

“… Malone isn’t coming in as a project. He’s already proven. During his time with the Denver Nuggets, he built a contender from the ground up and led the franchise to its first NBA title in 2023.

That alone changes how this hire should be viewed. UNC isn’t hoping he figures it out. They’re betting on someone who already has.

He also became the winningest coach in Nuggets history and earned multiple All-Star Game coaching nods along the way. Players respected him. Front offices trusted him. And his teams consistently had an identity….”

Thanks for posting that, but for me that piece was crap. The first paragraph was crap. The third paragraph was crap. The bullet points were crap. The rest of the piece was built on that crap. If I had a nickel for every bad take about the Carolina coaching search and this hire, I'd have more money than trump.

The Athletic reports that Sean May likely to remain on staff.

Also that Malone is apparently very tight with the top International agent (who is also Jokic's agent) who reps most of the top euro guys we in this coming portal (think Illinois this year).... if he bags a few top euro talents that is an unexpected positive aspect none here have really considered

Wikipedia says he worked with the Serbian Olympic Team as well.

Not knowing anything at all about the new coach I'll reserve any judgements until after I see how he does: with the Portal; who his asst. coaches are; his first interviews; Who he can retain on the team from last year (Veesaar?); Retaining Incoming Frosh we signed?; and finally, his first few games next season.

Once all of the above start falling into place, only then will I bitch and moan, or praise him, or just be milquetoast.

Right now I'm milquetoast and in the dark.
