UNC Basketball Possible coaches

You’re one step away from flat out rooting for coaches to spurn UNC lol.
I am class of '74 with a 30+ year membership in the Rams Club . My two daughters graduated with post graduate degrees from UNC. My grandson will be entering UNC this fall.

I am not " rooting for coaches to spurn UNC". I am offering an opinion about why home run coaches may not be interested in coming to UNC.

I'm sorry you chose an ad hominem attack rather than address my position

as a '74 grad, you should have a 50+ year membership under your belt

I may be completely wrong about this, and in fact I hope I am, but my sense in this era of college basketball is that unless someone has had a specific lifelong dream or desire to coach at a North Carolina or one of the historic blueblood programs, it might not make much sense for a coach to leave an established P4 program – especially one in the SEC or the Big Ten, or even an established national power like Arizona. From a resource standpoint, it’s hard to imagine any SEC or Big Ten school who desires to do so not being able to match or even potentially exceed the resources that Carolina puts into its basketball program these days. All of the national championship banners and all of the retired jerseys hanging in the rafters of the Dean E Smith Center are wonderful, but they don’t pay the bills so to speak in this day and age.

To me, a guy like Ben McCollum who has freaking Iowa on the doorstep of a Final Four, or a guy like Tommy Lloyd who has Arizona on the precipice of a possible national championship, or a guy like Dusty May who is doing similarly at a place where financial resources are truly unlimited, doesn’t really have a true incentive to uproot and leave established programs to go to North Carolina unless they’ve just had a career long dream and desire to coach one of college basketball‘s historic royalty.

I don’t say any of this to say that Carolina is not a phenomenal job or that we won’t be able to land a really good coach. It is, and we will. I just think there is a distinct possibility that we may be humbled a little bit here in this search. I hope I’m wrong.

That is my sentiment, as well.

People are certainly throwing out big takes for a process that is entering day 3 and most of our best choices are still unavailable.

‘Tis the era of the internet and 24/7 news cycles ingrained in us. 30+ years ago, this would feel like no time at all. We’d be patient and probably wouldn’t expect anything for at least a couple weeks, and be fine with that timeframe. Nowadays, once we get past 24 hours, we ask what’s taking so long?

Oh yeah, I definitely don't think it's all doom and gloom by any means. Not even close. We're going to get someone really good, or who at the very least is a significant upgrade. I just mean that if you look at our supposed top targets, it's very easy to understand why they'd stay n their current jobs. If T.J. Otzelberger doesn't feel that leaving freaking Iowa State for North Carolina is worth considering, it's probably true that Tommy Lloyd or Dusty May have even more reasons to not leave their current programs for UNC, and IMO that becomes more and more true the further and further they both advance in this tournament. That could even be true for Ben McCollum as well. Those guys are in the midst of proving right now that you can compete for and possibly win national championships at Iowa, Arizona, and Michigan just the same as you can at North Carolina, and do so without having Duke in your immediate backyard.

Regarding salary. I don’t think we need to outbid Texas or Alabama say .if a guy is making 4-6 million another million is not going to be the deciding factor If they think coaching here is cool

Yeah, if I had joined at 22yo I would have but I didn't draw a salary of $10,000/yr until I was in my 30s .

How old were you when you joined the Rams Club ?
22 and stationed in Germany. Even today, you can join for $50 and a young alum. I think I paid $20 my first year out. Come to think of it, that could have purchased 30+ Julius Echter Hefe, so you probably did it the right way.

I don't think joining as a young alum was an option back in the 70s but I could be wrong.

Thank you for your service and good for you that you joined when you were 22yo. (y)
So how many years have you been a member of the Rams Club ?
