UNC Basketball Possible coaches

Why don't you think he would consider it?
He's from Iowa City. Everywhere he's played and coached has been in Iowa or within spitting distance. He's only been there a year. He says he's not interested.

I just think he's Midwest to the absolute core. And kind of small town. If he'd been at Iowa for longer and was more acclimated to P4 basketball and the circus around it, maybe he would. Just doesn't feel realistic.

But there's a pretty good chance he's the best pure coach in the country.

Why the pessimism about Lloyd? It seemed to me that his comments recently indicated some level of interest.
Too good to be true. Seems to be in an excellent position already. Why would he choose to make a move? The only thing that makes me think there could be a possibility is the chatter about his relationship with the AD. Otherwise, I don’t really understand why he would choose to move from his current position, unless he has some secret dream to coach UNC that nobody is aware of.

Would you rather live in Arizona or Chapel Hill? It was 110 degrees last week in Arizona.

Chapel Hill > Tucson.
East Coast media attention > West Coast
UNC history and brand > UA
UNC transitioning to SEC/BIG >. No chance UA moving to P2
Input into 1B new basketball arena > UA’s arena
Dook rivalry > whoever is UA’s bb rival.

AZ to UNC seems comparable to Illinois to Kansas.

Why did Self leave Illinois in 2003?

Looks like we got Mark Byington a raise and an extension at Vanderbilt. Cross him off the list.

All that matters is the buyout. If that didn’t change, the number of years in the contract is not that meaningful.

Also, Kansas and other schools will be sniffing around, too, so this wasn’t just UNC defense.

There is no way they signed him to a new extension without raising the buyout.

But that wasn't playing defense, was it? That was trying to give confidence for recruiting.
It really depends what Byington and his agent were able to negotiate. They may have considered themselves to have leverage over Vandy as of today and not been willing to agree to an increased buyout. If you are Vandy, do you really want to play hardball with your in demand coach?

Byington: I don't want to increase the buyout
Vandy: Not even for $15M over 5 years?
Byington: What buyout figure did you have in mind?

Dusty May doesn't want to leave AA? Does he love the snow and ice and subzero temperatures and Michigan roads and Michigan road construction after the harsh winter? My son is at AA and he says there are potholes everywhere.

That’s possible. It’s also possible Vandy just wanted a press release. This happens every coach hiring season and sometimes coaches sign extensions and stay and sometimes they still leave.

He did. He is also the greatest college football coach ever. But there is also a big deference between being a head football coach and a head basketball coach. One is a lot more hands on in all areas than the other.
But your dad's comment about people losing their drive in their mid-60's was in response to Mack Brown being rehired by UNC's football coach. Maybe the lesson here is that if you get the best players year after year it matters a lot less how old the head coach is. Ergo, let's hire somebody whom the best players want to play for..

Ann Arbor is very much like Chapel Hill. And you are inside all winter coaching basketball so the weather is probably no. 10 on his list of concerns.
