UNC Basketball Possible coaches

The problem with this is that the longer this search goes on, the further behind we get in the portal process. Next season could get VERY BAD.
These things tend to go very fast once the dominoes start to fall. In an ideal world, we would hire a coach who could bring players with him, like Byington. If you go with a Donovan type, you will need to be active in the portal -- recognizing that a lot of those deals have already been made.

That said, with a big enough budget and a big enough name, you could make up for lost ground quickly.

Moreover, it is better to sacrifice next year to make sure you get the right guy. It is highly unlikely we would win the national championship next year, even with Dusty May. So, make the right hire and build for the long term.

So the thought now is we hire BD, who will be 61, and we may not be able to field a team next year because of timing issues? And hope that he can rebound in y2 as he becomes eligible for social security?

Is Phil Jackson or Red Auerbach available?
Give me Red Auerbach

I think that might have been logic in hiring Uncle Bill. Let's hope UNC makes up lost ground quickly in football and basketball.

I have felt from the beginning that it would probably be BD, which I would not be very excited about. “Not being able to field a team” is way overboard though. He will have the opportunity to put together a solid enough roster. But I don’t expect better results overall than what we’ve been seeing. We’ll see if it ends up being him.

Lloyd had no intentions of leaving and simply played the hand he was dealt by getting a new deal. He can’t be blamed.

UNC targeted him and he was identified early on as the home run hire and so went after it. Made a pitch, but missed. No dishonor in making that attempt.

You shoot for the stars first and see what happens.

I asked on this thread a couple days ago about what happens should this drag on for weeks - or even months for Chrissakes - how embarrassing can it be? I also said I don’t think it plays out that way, just speculating like everyone else is.

Lloyd played us and Zona, but he’s not at fault. It’s not his problem he’s sought after. UNC is not at fault for swing for the fences. The ink is just now getting dry on HDs termination papers. We shall see how the other offer(s) go.

But lest we forget, the NC State grads on the BOG and the Art Popes do NOT have UNC’s best interests at heart. Certainly not in athletics nor in other areas of concern.

Are you a mind reader?

if Arizona didn’t give him a raise and eliminate the problematic AD, you think he would have stayed there? I don’t.

Nope. But I just think Lloyd and his agent got on the stick and did the homework the first time he heard his name mentioned.
Zona, too. I’m sure they immediately went to Tommy to ask “What’s gonna take to keep you? He prolly said $X amount and I don’t ever want to talk to that fucking AD ever again. That conversation didn’t take long.
And it doesn’t take a mind reader to figure out that’s more than likely what went down…

Always been the case. Will be for some time to come. The ruination of public ivy is the goal.

Go after May and then down the list with Otzelberger, Byington and McCollum. I would rather have a college coach that is younger and maybe can bring some good players with him than Donovan.

It appears there was not a great plan in place when Hubert was let go. This was always the biggest concern.
Bullshit.

We’re going for the best coaches available in CBB, that takes time as many of them advance deep into the tournament. There’s no real way to speed up that process unless you forgo those guys as options.

If we wanted a speedy hire, that inherently means choosing from a lower tier option whose team was already out of the tournament early on (or didn’t make the tournament).

If we end up with a coach on the same level as HD or we haven’t named a coach 3 weeks from now, then we can start talking about “no plan in place”. But until one of those things happen, folks should have a bit of patience to see how the process turns out.

I’m worried about there being a plan.

I’m sure it wasn’t the snap of a finger either. That is a big ask to have the basketball coach report to the president.
