UNC Basketball Possible coaches

Among the candidates he's the closest in profile to BB but BB is so much worse.

And because he lives in Ames, IA although it is only 30 miles from the big city (Des Moines!)

And because Iowa St is in the Big 12 conference. UNC currently plays in the sorry ass ACC but that is a temporary arrangement. Eventually, UNC will be in either the SEC or Big Ten which means a lot more money for all athletic programs. No matter how much success Iowa State has, they will be far down the list of potential expansion targets for the big two conferences, while UNC is at the very top of that list.
 
Not a fan of Donavan as the next coach. I am worried that the same people that wanted Belichick would want him, though, just because of the "buzz" it would create. Brad Stevens has been out of coaching for a while, but I think it would be a great hire with his experience as a college coach, NBA coach and NBA executive. That's a great combo for today's college basketball since it's really like another G League now. However, it looks like he has already said he doesn't want to leave his current position.

That really leaves May, Lloyd, Otzelberger and Byington in my opinion. Maybe Hoiberg at Nebraska if none of those work out. I think May and Lloyd are the least likely to want to leave their current positions. I think Otzelberger would be a great choice.

I believe he got a fair shake and was just on the wrong side of being able to continue. In the end it was a business decision and those aren't always cut and dried choices.

I think it would be considerably more difficult to convince any coach at a SEC or Big Ten school to leave the financial security those conferences provide for a move to an ACC school. (Granted, UNC is more than your average "ACC school" but the conference money can't be ignored.) I suspect UNC will be joining one of those conferences by 2030, but right now we have to listen to "money is tight" conversations that the B1G and SEC schools just don't have to deal with. I think pulling May, Byington or Hoiberg could be a tough sell. I believe enticing a Lloyd or Otzelberger would be more realistic. If I'm Byington, I wait until Kentucky fires Pope next year and just move north 100 miles and keep it in the SEC.

Somebody I respect in basketball circles used this same logic to explain why Hurley may be more interested than one would think. Also his Dad had great respect for DES.

I perceive Hurley as a Northeast guy who would only leave for the Knicks or Celtics job (and Im not convinced NBA guys would respond to his style). I don't think there's a good cultural fit with him at UNC though, even though he's a great coach.

I believe it goes back to recruiting wars they had when Donovan was at UF. Was it the infamous Euro trip that Brett Bearup rigged for Donovan? I believe Roy thought he had Mike Miller secured and lost him to UF.

it started with BD/UF winning the recruiting battle for mike miller over Roy/KU. nearly 30 years ago.

From what I just read God has told Stevens to stay away from the "crapshoot" called college basketball. God: "Keep what is maybe the best job in basketball, son".
