UNC Basketball Possible coaches

If we had scanned Tier III bios five years ago we would already have Lloyd or May.
Yeah, seems that the general consensus was that we would have no problem obtaining a top five coach. It doesn’t look like that will likely happen. We may get a high upside up-and-comer, but I don’t think we are going to roll out a top five coach next year, and we may spend $15MM in buyouts to get there. Donors do not have unlimited funds and there are competing priorities, and Belichick is a considerable drain on resources. Luckily, we have a PE guy in charge who can leverage our financial future to the gills.
i don’t care about consensuses, my feeling from the beginning was we had little to no shot of getting these “tier 1” guys.
Dean Smith wasn’t a tier one guy. Mike K wasn’t a tier one guy. May and Lloyd weren’t tier one guys when they were hired.
Why can’t our department do the actual work of finding the next coach instead of conducting it like any dumb jackass on the internet could do.
“Durr…leets just make offers to all the best established coaches and we surely will get one of them.”
A fucking high schooler could come up with that plan. Why do we pay millions to people to do what anyone could do. FFS.

I don't mean to pick on you or anyone else but this strikes me as ironic(?)...So competitive is what we're after then?
There’s a distinct difference between being “competitive” in year 1 due to exogenous factors that shouldn’t be repeated as opposed to being “competitive” as the seeming ceiling of the program.

I think the problem may be that school brand makes no difference these days. Many folks are living in the past where being the coach of the greatest basketball program meant something. I submit that top tier coaches are not interested in transferring to a blueblood. Top tier coaches are saying "Show me the money ! "

A lot of people have said that. But brand and money for NIL are inextricably intertwined. How many no-brand schools are in the Final Four this year? How many were in the top 10 all year?

If anything, brands are more important now than ever.

They thought they would always have someone from the Carolina family to hire instead of being proactive and doing the research for the future.

Yeah but that doesn’t make ours more relatively valuable in any meaningful way. We’ve gone from one of 3-5 perennial bluebloods to one of 10-15 elite-ish, and apparently pulling up the rear on that one.

That is confusing the present team with the program brand.

The brand is far more than 10-15 elite-ish. Obviously, it can erode over time but it’s still a top brand, capable of attracting top talent and top money.

The evidence suggests otherwise as far as attracting top talent goes.

That’s confusing the last coach with the brand. Hubert was an impediment in the portal era and had a bad reputation with agents. We got some good ones (like Veesar and Harrison) but not nearly as much as we could with a coach that matched our brand.
